"One great strength of science fiction is that it creates new worlds. The downside is that creating new worlds is hard. Many science fiction films cut corners, falling back on convenient but scientifically dubious notions such as that faster-than-light travel is no big deal, or that aliens all look like (and can mate with) humans, or that everyone in the galaxy speaks English. For the most part science fiction fans have had to grit their teeth and suspend disbelief, but one recent trend offers hope: The rising use of constructed languages, or "conlangs," for movie aliens. Not having them talk to you in a Brooklyn accent or use Valley slang from Southern California helps transport you into that world," says Lawrence M. Schoen, director of the Klingon Language Institute. "And I think that Hollywood has seen that's very effective, and is a lot cheaper than CGI."…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

So go on Editor Bill or staff explain how we can wargame a language or create a miniature out of a language? This post and Ultramodern is suffering serious mission creep and you can't seem to see it. You have deleted other stuff for non- warrgaming/non-miniatures reasons yet you allow these types of non-wargame posts to flourish. I am baffled. Really. |

This is in SF MEDIA, Venezia… If you don't like it for not having anything miniature related, don't read it. |

Surely any good Klingon will want to pronounce his battle cries properly when playing Star Fleet Battles… There ya go, gaming link. |

If you're not interested in the topic, don't click. If your beef is with Tango, which I suspect it is, then use the "Ignore" feature and you'll never see his posts again. Problem solved. As is, this is gaming related. For one thing, an RPG group might want to experiment with conversations in a "conlang" for added verisimilitude, or a game of SFB or ST:AW or other Star Trek might try using Klingon commands to represent "coded communications intercepts." And of course written conlangs have been a part of fantasy and SF RPGing for years. So venezia's complaint is unfounded. |

Thanks, Tango! I'm passing this link to my daughter who is a linguist. She and one of her partners entered a conlag for a Scyfi series, but were not selected. She's a geek like her dad and will love this ariticle. Lloyd |

No, it's not a Tango thing, thank you very much. It's a where is the wargame link because the poster has failed to make it. Anyway I think I have raised a serious question about mission creep on TMP, so nanu-nanu or whatever you aliens say. Venezia … is beginning to looks like Mr. Margard aka Mayor B… An unworthy response designed to shut someone up, like calling someone a racist to end a discussion – its a distraction ploy. Frankly, it was never about you. And out. |

My Klingon Bird of Prey … in the service of Chaos … one of the spacecraft in my 6mm inventory. I know its not 6mm. But it fits in nicely regardless …

I use Sikh and Gurkha war cries all the time in Flames of War. And that's in a REALISTIC game! In sci fi, all bets are off. seriously though… It is the Dear Editor in Chief who defines what is appropriate. Not the peanut gallery. Hit the complaint button [!] if it offends thee. |

Venezia, is Warrgaming what the heathen Scots do? |
Parzival | 06 Oct 2014 9:36 p.m. PST |
No, it's not a Tango thing, thank you very much. Then I withdraw that comment. But given that Tango is a frequent target, the assumption is not unreasonable. It's a where is the wargame link because the poster has failed to make it. But the rest of us have. Which is the point of bringing a topic up for discussion-- to gain the input of the TMP community. Just because an immediate link to gaming isn't offered doesn't mean it isn't there. And in this case, since the topic board is the SF Media board, and SF movies are a frequent inspiration for SF gaming, as others have noted your complaint seems even more unfounded. |
