Gamers,

I'm interested in trying out Black Powder, to game a variety of 18th Century conflicts. I'm interested in finding (the most) generic set of 18th Century 1/72 scale Horse & Musket figures that I can find, to determine if I like the ruleset, and which specific era within the century most interests me. To that end, I ask you:

Other than Native Americans/Woodland Indians, which 1/72 plastic figures or range of figures would you recommend to a person interested in trying out Black Powder, as well as a variety of other rulesets?

If I were to pick specific areas of interest, they'd range from the GNW/WSS era to the WAS/SYW era. I know that's a big span and very few figures would cover this very important period, but remember they will be proxies. In the end, I plan to use them for whichever period most interests me, and/or trade them or buy more and better ones.

Cheers.

P.S. Not Naps, not ACW, not AWI, not Romans. SYW? Are there Marlburian 1/72 plastic figures?

Try Risk game pieces from either the current or 2004 edition- you can find the old set on ebay fairly cheaply. They are NOT 1/72 though, slightly smaller than the current 15mm figure ranges.

Well I am currently building a Jacobite Rebellion set up, using RedBox for British Infantry. I also am using their Highlanders and their Militia and Loyalist Troops, some as British Army and some as Jacobites. Most of my Jacobites are Strelets. I had a problem with cavalry, looked at Zvedza Swedish GNW, lovely figures but they are giants compared to RedBox and Strelets. I decided on Strelets GNW Trabants for cavalry, a bit chunky but OK. Some of my Jacobite cavalry will be heavily converted Napoleonic. Artillery is a problem. I had an old Revell set of Austrian SYW artillery, but again they are larger than RedBox or Strelets. I the end I have gone for IMEX AWI British and American Artillery, still a bit large and uniforms not completely right, but which will look OK with a bit of plastic welding. The guns are all small, which is good for Jacobite Rebellion one and a half or three pounders.

I do have several sets of old Accurate AWI British Infantry (now reissued as IMEX) which I am considering converting as Hessians.

Many of these would work for WAS and perhaps for SYW.

An alternative would be to go for larger figures, then you could use Hat Prussians (they come in Command, Marching and Action sets) plus Zvezda Swedish GNW cavalry and Revell SYW Austrian artillery (the latter discontinued but it is possible to get sets either from second hand sellers or on e-bay).

I did look at the Spanish manufacturer BUM/GerMan but they are effectively made to order at three or four times the price of other manufacturers.

Good to know. I need to check out PSR more often.

Excellent suggestion. The game is only like $20. USD I may just buy a new set, for old-times revisited sake. Cheers.

@Rod MacArthur: Very interesting. I'll check it out. Best of luck with your '45s!
