Did George Washington have a mapmaker on his staff? I'm reading a book on the Battle of Brandywine and I'm struck by the fact that Washington was severely handicapped by a lack of knowledge of the surrounding countryside. The British commander, General Howe, actually had better information at his disposal than Washington. Considering that Washington started out as a surveyor, I would think he would have a strong appreciation for the importance of maps and make sure he had some good mapmakers working for him.

Go into the collection for the Revolution as it has made available many of Erkine's maps. Note the Rochambeau collection as well as the "other" maps. – R
