Did George Washington have a mapmaker on his staff? I'm reading a book on the Battle of Brandywine and I'm struck by the fact that Washington was severely handicapped by a lack of knowledge of the surrounding countryside. The British commander, General Howe, actually had better information at his disposal than Washington. Considering that Washington started out as a surveyor, I would think he would have a strong appreciation for the importance of maps and make sure he had some good mapmakers working for him. |

Go into the collection for the Revolution as it has made available many of Erkine's maps. Note the Rochambeau collection as well as the "other" maps. – R link |
