I live in California, where "5150" refers to the involuntary psychiatric hold authorized by California Welfare and Institutions Code section 5150. That is, "chill or I'll get the man to 5150 your ass", or, "we can take your mom into custody on a 5150".

So when I first saw the game, my first thought was that it presented rules for capturing people having psychotic episodes.

Anyway, that's the strange resonance of 5150 for me.

I've always wondered if there was any connection between the fact that quaaludes were often refered to as "714s" and the fact that Joe Friday's badge number was "714".

I didn't know that; likely I had heard of it on television shows, but it didn't really register when the game was released.

One could make a "Philip K. Dick" mod for the game, where the protagonist isn't certain of whether he's having hallucinations of a future war, or whether he's in some kind of virtual reality 21st century, with the authorities trying to keep him sane enough to fight. Just a thought.

Can't get to my rules right now (sick dog sleeping on my lap) but Ed deliberately chose "5150" because of its link to the penal code.

Methaqualone was manufactured by the Lemmon company under the brand name "Quaalude". It had an identifying number "714" stamped on it.

The drug had the street names of "Lemmons", Lemmon 7s", and "714s".

It's explicit in the original version of the rules, for sure. He made up a futuristic "5150" code applying to aliens instead of people with mental disabilities

That's the first I've heard of the 5150 code, and I live in California.

You learn something new every day.

What tkdguy said.

That's why Van Halen's first album with Sammy Hagar is titled 5150.

If you read through the various THW rule sets, you will notice that Billy Pink turns up everywhere, like he's a Timelord or something. But, mayhaps all this gaming stuff is just in our own heads and we ALL need commitment… ;)

It is. Read the intro quote in the rule book. It's a deliberately reworded rendering of the CA state penal code section…evil grin
