New monument honoring the fallen at Maloyaroslavets and particulary Father Vasiliy Vasilkovsky – chaplain of the 19th Jäger.

After exemplary service at Borodino, he was wounded himself twice while tending to the wounded in the middle of the battle for the monastery (seen in the background of the photos below). Father Vasily was awarded the Order of Saint-George for this action, but – refusing to leave the regiment and advancing with them into Germany – he died about a year later from complications from his wounds.

The occassion of the monument's dedication also permitted substantial physical renovations to the monastery, currently the home for a rather devout order of lady-monks who run an orphanage for girls. The lady-monks had rebuilt the monastery as best they could by hand, after the end of the soviet régime, but a real complete re-building was beyond their skills and means.

May we pray that the fallen shall rest in eternal peace, and for the happiness and the future of the little girls at the orphanage.

Hi Alexandre, I'm very slowly working towards wargaming Maloyaroslavets in 10mm, and I'm always hungry for more info on the battle and the town. So thanks for posting this and the links. Fascinating! Regards, Seb
