Some years back I got a review copy of Amanda Foreman's A World On Fire, as part of the Amazon Vine programme. In it were many exquisite engravings, credited to Frank Vizetelly.
Then, more recently, I bought three 1960s editions of National Geographic, in search of some fantastic battlefield maps that had haunted me for years. In the first of these (April, 1961) there was a whole article devoted to Vizetelly and his work, in which I learned that he sent back sketches and notes, and then engravers in England turned this material into the beautiful artworks for the ILN.
I got so into this stuff that I soon discovered a lot more in the Harvard and Emory University archives, and thought, hell, why don't I write a short 'essay' type thing on the subject?
