My SO and I are both a large round-numbered age next year, so we have agreed that to celebrate we will do a pair of weekend trips to a city in Europe. She chooses one, and I the other. Unless there is a better suggestion from the members here, I think mine is decided. 4 days, over by birthday weekend in September, to see Troy and Gallipoli – unless you can suggest a better treat ? |

In that part of the world, Ephesus is not to be missed. |

Been to Ephesus twice already. Once as a teenager, then again quite recently. Great place to go, but sadly a bit overrun with tourist coaches nowadays :( |

Depends what you want from your weekend really, I really like Venice but in September it might still very busy. Budapest is fantastic with two excellent military museums, the mighty Danube and seemingly a national diet of beer, stew and cake. What is not to like? |

It sounds like you are aiming at the other end of the continent, but I've found Edinburgh one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in Europe. It's gorgeous, has a great castle, excellent museums… Once I arrived in Edinburgh and the cabbie asked me where I'd come in from. When I told him I'd come from London he turned back, smiled, and said "Well, welcome to civilization!" I found it pretty amusing. Have a great trip, wherever you go! |

I'm not really 'Aiming' anywhere. I'm just looking for somewhere interesting for a short break in Sept. Luckily my wife shares an interest in ancient sites, and has just finished working through the UK GCSE History syllabus with the disabled kid she was supporting. WW1 and the lead up to WW2 are a major part of that, so I think it's a good choice. But, if there is a more interesting option, I'd consider almost anywhere … |

Second a visit to Edinburgh. Plenty of archaeology in the neighbourhood. Dozens of castles within an hours drive. The Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle is a very poignant place as well as the Regimental Museums, Mons Meg, One O'clock Gun, Scottish Crown Jewels, Stone of Destiny, St Margaret's Chapel, Oh, and the Castle itself. Well worth a visit any day. |

it's really down to your own interests, but I can recommend both Prague & Berlin as interesting city breaks |
