Beautiful stuff but did such a truce ever happen?

Pete Melvin02 Oct 2014 3:19 a.m. PST

In the Western desert? Maybe. There were a lot of unofficial "rules" and quite gentlemanly behaviour at times.

Nice work, but it looks more like "The Surrender".

There sure were "agreements" like that. I can't remember exactly who's autobiography (Luck's perhaps?), but he was in charge of some recce armoured cars in the desert. A new crew arrived and went out on patrol at night and shot up some British trucks. This upset the unofficial agreement that the Germans and British had to only recce and fight during the day so that all could get a decent night's sleep.

Sgt. Troy and Hauptmann Dietrich were known to do truces!

Yeah it was von Luck's Panzer Commander. I was trying to remember where i'd seen the example and that was it.

In this diorama the British don't seem to be armed – while the Germans clearly are – hence the 'Surrender' or 'Parole' perhaps being a more apt title.

I remember reading one story where the Germans captured a British recce unit's doctor. A few hours later, a German appeared before the British lines with a white flag and a note from the doctor, saying that he'd be back for dinner, after he'd patched up some German wounded.

The Germans always thought of fighting the British as sport, certainly compared to fighting the Russians.

I recall reading about a British armored car that was missing one night in the desert.
The British called on open radio to the Germans if they had the crew.
The Germans replied that yes they had them and they were safe drinking tea.
The British replied "thanks much, we were worried."
