Is there a way to determine which track should get the winch bumper and which one gets the square roll bar bumper? Say did the Platoon Command track get it or did any of the platoon support tracks have them? I'm about to put my FOW US Armored Infantry Platoon together so I'd like to know. Anyhoo thanks and salut y'all!

Generally, the platoon command half track got the winch, and the rest got the rollers!!

Sounds like a life lesson in that somehow!!!

That's what I thought. Thanks and salut Paul!

Does anyone know how that works with the Israeli forces in the 6 day war? Did they just use what they got, or were the rollers cut off and replaced? Almost every photo seems to show their halftracks with winches, there's not many with rollers. That goes for AA and mortar variants too.

I don't know anything about IDF use, but some WW2 variants (eg M16 MGMC) were only built with the winch. As far as plain personnel carriers were concerned, my sources are more than vague. While I readily accept that if a selection of shiny new HTs turned up then the winches could well end up with the platoon command. But were there official policies on their allocation depending on role (eg for engineers), and what proportion were still being manufactured with the roll bumper after the introduction of the winch?

I'm just putting together some PSC M5's for my Brit motor battalion. Do the same comments winch vs roller apply to them too?

Number 4 , back when I bought my Late War Polish Motor Coy I bought all the M-5 Halftracks from Bfront. They only came with the pewter roller bumper so I would say no on the M-5's. I can't say the same for the M-9's as I have seen a few photo's of these with the winch bumper. Anyhoo salut y'all!

M5s could have winch:

Cool. I went for the winch so I could use the spare rollers to fix a couple ex Esci M3 Scout Cars, the bumpers of which broke off and disappeared years ago!
