There are more than a few missing! One big one was the fog after the Battle of Long Island in 1776 – if the weather had been clear Washington might have had a hard time evacuating his army, and the loss of the Continental Army at that stage of the war might have been fatal to the American cause |

Overnight rain at Waterloo delays beginning of the battle by several hours – gives time for the Prussians to arrive. Cue 100 years or so without continent wide warfare in Europe. And I can't remember the year but I recall the last throw of the dice for the Western Roman Empire was an amphibious attack on barbarians occupying Tunisia (?) – wind scatters fleet just before they land. Cue Dark Ages. There are lots of these things in military history. The Weather Channel series like so much on cable / satellite TV is centred on recent American history – it needs to be recent so they have some moving pictures because obviously simply having some guy standing around being erudite isn't exciting enough for modern TV producers…. |
