I'm posting this for Tango as he takes his regular 5 minute break once a week ;-) (this story is three days old at the time of posting). It isn't an "official" declaration. Just a point of interest. TEL AVIV – Russia has delivered a behind-the-scenes threat to retaliate if airstrikes carried out by the U.S. or its allies target the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Middle Eastern security officials told WND.The security officials said Russia complained Sunday in quiet talks with United Nations representatives that the Obama administration's current aerial campaign against Islamic State fighters in Syria is a violation of international agreements regarding control of Syrian airspace. The officials said Russia warned it could potentially retaliate if U.S. or Arab airstrikes go beyond targeting Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, and instead bomb any Syrian regime targets. link Others have suggested that ISIS strikes will be used as a cover to hit Assad. link |

Are the Russians going to fly CAP for Assad ? Or send naval assets into the Med, etc. to interfer with the US NAVY ? Probably not … If Putin and his boys are so worried about Assad, why don't they fly missions against the FSA and Deash ? |

Are there any Russian-speaking Syrians? Perhaps Putin should annex it. |

Have Assad take refuge in the Chinese embassy. That will keep him safe. |

Now, let Assad move in with Julien Assange in the Ecuadorian Embassy and then maybe Britain would let you bomb them-conventional weapons only! Rod Robertson.

Yeah, third time's a charm! Let's see, I count: 1 Charles XII – Poltava 2 Napoleon – Moscow, Beresina 3 Hitler – Stalingrad so that would fourth time's the charm. |

Sixth time the charm??? A few Teutonic knights rode eastward till meeting a certain Prince of Rus on a lakeshore and as mentioned the Mongol Horde group. The only "successful" group was the Mongol Horde (1st invasion?). They went westward…. maybe that is the trick to take Russia…. Rus never saw them coming and couldn't retreat into then "Polish/Cossack" territory. |

Have Assad take refuge in the Chinese embassy. That will keep him safe. I may not like the Chinese too much, but what did they do to deserve that?!? |

I suspect the Russians would rumble a few brigades through Ukraine. That would require an immediate realignment of forces. There'd probably be deployments of Russian ships to Mediterranean as well as secret deployments of S300 type SAMs to the region. |

Putin won't go to war with the US over Assad, any more than the US will go to war with Russia over Georgia or the Ukraine. But putting this and similar stories in the press is a kind of manipulative PR event that makes Russia's friends feel good and would make the US deny they were going to do it. Also, it's one thing to bomb ISIS/ISIL/IS and another to bomb Assad. |

Also, it's one thing to bomb ISIS/ISIL/IS and another to bomb Assad. From memory the US invented the phrase "mission creep." |

Actually I think the Germans invented mission creep in 41. |

Lebensraum in what is Russia was always part of the plan. And if the Italians had a clue, there would've been no need to intervene in Greece via Yugoslavia or Africa. |

Putin is just pushing Obama around. Now that he knows he can get away with doing it, he'll keep at it. |

Dobby, Dobby, your threats are meaningless. Reminding everybody you're a nuclear power, so what. Are you going to take off your shirt and absorb the radiation that'll cover Mother Russia? |

The only "successful" group was the Mongol Horde (1st invasion?). They went westward…. maybe that is the trick to take Russia…. Rus never saw them coming and couldn't retreat into then "Polish/Cossack" territory. What about the Polish invasion of 1612? They captured Moscow, impossed a Polish-sponsored Tsar and they didn't left until 1618. Don't forget either that the Russians were soundly defeated by the Germans in 1917, and only the defeat of Germany in the Western Front allowed the Bolsheviks to recover the provinces lost at Brest-Litovsk. |

Just in case he does, I'm learning Russian. Also, where can I put a bet on them being the victor? Might as well do well out of it just in case there is anywhere habitable left. |
