the A10 was officially named the Thunderbolt II after the P47

I kind of agree that it was more after the P47 also. The P47 was an ok fighter, but an excellent ground attack plane. It could take a beating and keep going, and deliver a powerful punch!

I always thought that the A1 Skyraider and the A37 Dragonfly were the inspiration.

The name was the merest of air force connection.

@Garrison: The A10 has the same problem, but we just rigged it to turn the 'spark plugs' on every time you pull the trigger.

And I'm tempted to take the USAF generals out and have them shot as it is…
