I am looking for a set of rules for WSS. I will be playing with 48 fig infantry and 24 fig cavalry units. I am looking for base removal and not individual figures. Battle size small – ie tabletop teaser scenarios 4 -8 infantry units a side. 2 – 4 cavalry units and 1 or 2 artillery. I am not interested in using black powder. Many Thanks Rich. |

if you organise units in 4 bases (12 inf and 6 cav) you could play Maurice from Sam Mustafa Alex |

Maurice and Black powder basing can be compatible. That same scheme will also work for Piquet or Field of Battle. |

You might try Grand Ambition or 18th century Game of war both are on wargame vault. 18c game of war says 16 figures but you could double that or ignore that and use 24 fig battalions |

I think Beneath the Lily Banners would work. Units would be over double the infantry standard size and 4 times the cavalry, but this would be possible with a bit of jigging? |

Charge (Young). The Wargame (Grant). Both are very old school and both use larger battalion sizes. Henry Hyde's Shot Steel and Stone rules would work because they do base removal. Unit size can be adjusted and have some suggestions in the book. The rules set are in The Wargames Compendium. |

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion's I will be getting 10mm figures I have decided to use 25mm square bases with 6 infantry or 3 cavalry figures. This is because I think the column's would look better, than having 50mm wide bases with 12 inf, 6 cav on. I have 2 options for Maurice 1) Have 8 stand units and count each 2 stands as 1 or 2) Have 8 stand units counting each stand. How would option 2 affect the rules. Many Thanks Rich. |

Having recently "discovered" Twilight of the Sun King, published by the Pike and Shot Society, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It was written for 10/12 mm figures and uses rectangular bases – two per brigade, but four square ones would work just as well. Most importantly, it produces tense games that finish in an evening. Maurice really hinges on four stands per unit, as the measuring unit is a base width, so your option 2 is out. Option 1 would work very well however, simply by defining 50mm as your base width. |

I do Maurice with 15mm figures on 30x40mm basis with 32 figures for infantry and 12 for cavalry. |

Seconded – also, Charles Grant Jnr's scenario books (52 scenarios and the follow-up "Programmed Scenarios") are ideal for ideas for these rules. |
