Gentle Friends, I'm trying to remember a children's book author from the 60s or 70s who did a series of books about colonial subjects, including a soldier's clothes and kit, all illustrated in a pen-and-ink style. Similar to Holling Clancy Holling but not him. Maybe C. Keith Wilbur? I remember the style being cleaner, and I can't find a publication date earlier than the 90s for CKW. The books were tall, somewhat thin, and I think they were hardcover. Any similar illustrated books on the subject greatly appreciated. Thanks for your suggestions. Cheers. |

Jack Coggins did a lot of illustrated books on military topics-his arms and equipment of the Civil War is one of my favorites-but I don't remember any on the AWI. My copy of Wilber's "Picture Book of the Continental Soldier" (which may well be the book you are thinking of) has a '69 copyright date so he may be what you were thinking of. If you are getting your pub dates from Amazon or another bookseller they might be republication dates. Dennis |

Wilbur did several soft-bound illustration-dense books on the colonial era, including one of my favorites --Patriots and Privateers of the American Revolution, which really breaks down the operation of a sailing ship to the nitty-gritty.
Coggins did The Fighting Man (a sweep through history touching on the major eras and styles of warriors), Arms and Equipment of the Civil War, and Ships and Seamen of the American Revolution. |
