I wrote a brief post about one of my favorite books when I was a kid, F. van Wyck Mason's The Battle for Quebec, illustrated by Victor Mays.

This was the book that got me interested in the era, back when I was ten or so. (That and the fact that we were literally surrounded by forts from the war where I grew up.)

If you've read the book, or other works by Mason, or are familiar with the work of illustrator Mays, I'd be interested to hear any thoughts, or learn more about their careers.

Excellent stuff. I recently obtained two volumes entitled battles of the nineteenth century, even older than this but in a similar vein. Some of the stories are by G Henty, complete with etchings, very inspiring!
