"A Western-backed opposition force of around 12,000 to 15,000 will be needed to retake areas of eastern Syria controlled by Islamic State militants, the top U.S military officer said on Friday, as the Pentagon outlined the first steps in a U.S.-led training program that could run several years.

The Pentagon said its assessment teams have already arrived in Saudi Arabia to help map out a U.S.-led program there expected to train more than 5,000 Western-backed opposition fighters in the first year.

Screw that…am I the only one who thinks it's high time for the Russians to start shipping all those mothballed T-80s to the SAA? Hows about supporting the side that doesn't massacre religious minorities…

There are no moderate rebels. Once upon a time, there were, but nowadays their numbers and influence are so small as to be largely irrelevant. Libya all over again.

I love the fact that we are training the next big group of terrorists! Doesn't anyone study history anymore!?!

Not in the USA/West – too focused on this present minute without any consideration of past or future.

I say we go in and annex the whole region. How bad could it be?..:)

I had a similar idea.

Create a corporate partnership with Russia and China and smash the entire Arab world down. Victors get access to oil rights dependent on contribution as per contractual terms and conditions!

I thought you were going to say that nuking it from orbit was the only way to be sure.

I think we should definitely support Assad and terminate the career of any politican/intelligence analyst/officer who was involved in arming terrorists from Libya through to Syria and Iraq. If you don't turf out the war mongers they will be looking for trouble elsewhere. Better that they should be worried about jail time.
