Now that it's over, come clean, did you:

1. Never stifle anyone
2. Stifle everyone
3. Only stifled people to avoid them
4. Stifled people solely to annoy them
5. Used stifle as a cooling off period, for both of you
6. Deny everything and demand proof.

Life on TMP appears to be calmer these past few weeks. laugh

Citizen Kenau29 Sep 2014 8:12 a.m. PST

I stifle (and ignore) to avoid and to immensely increase my enjoyment in TMP.

Winston Smith29 Sep 2014 8:17 a.m. PST

It's safe to talk about the S-word now. I guess.
I only stifled obnoxious louts who annoyed me. Surprisingly that is not one of your choices. Thus showing the perils of having those with an agenda design polls. However, no polls are non biased.

Although they amused me, it's a good thing that the tables are gone. I wanted to keep the stats that let us know, but not let others know, how many we had. It's not a bad thing that we cannot view our own stats, though. It has put an end to the annoying chest thumping "Real MEN do not stifle!"
At least until you brought it up again. grin

The Tin Dictator29 Sep 2014 8:23 a.m. PST

I never stifled anyone.

I did collect a few.
But, doesn't our hobby make us all collectors anyway?

Weasel29 Sep 2014 8:24 a.m. PST

I've made one stifle/ignore thingie ever, which was to keep the front page from getting crowded out by non-gaming topics.

It isn't over, the button still works, it just doesn't show in peoples profiles.

Martin Rapier29 Sep 2014 9:01 a.m. PST

I only stifle people who make my blood boil and spoil my enjoyment of TMP. There aren't many in that category, although one particular neo-nazi really got my goat with his interesting views on euthenasia and the disabled.

Maddaz11129 Sep 2014 9:20 a.m. PST

Freedom of speech, means I have freedom to read it, and if I don't agree, ignore it (but I don't have to stifle it, my brain has an ignore function)

There are a few abusive types on here that clearly have issues with common decency and equalities, but I am happy to explain to them the mistakes with their position.

I'm with The Tin Dictator.

Pizzagrenadier29 Sep 2014 9:36 a.m. PST

Never done it. Never saw the need to have a website ignore someone for me. Plus, never really hated anyone here enough. Only one person came close.

I thought the opposite was true?

1. I never stifled nor ignored anyone. I disagreed with some but never stifled or ignored them. I like to hear others points of view. It helps keep me on my toes.

Same as Winston Smith. Strange, isn't it, how often we agree?
I miss knowing how many I have, but that information is not necessary.

And now, the whole "Stifles should only last X months" argument is totally pointless. I can manage my stifles and nobody has a clue.
No inane "But the HR department can research my online behavior and wonder why I have 678 stifles and then not hire me or give me a raise!" arguments.
No more "My feelings are hurt and I demand to know who hurt them!"

THIS much on TMP has quieted down.

KTravlos29 Sep 2014 10:08 a.m. PST

1., though I think I once stifled someone. Cannot remember.

Stifle "sins"?

1. I have never stifled anyone, even when they annoy me. People who seem to be 180 out from me and who frequently had attacked my posts for trivial details or just to be rude, still might provide just the useful nugget of information which I needed. Which, in fact, happened more than once.

venezia sta affondando29 Sep 2014 11:07 a.m. PST

Stifle "sins"?

It's all in the eye of the beholder. That's all.

Pictors Studio29 Sep 2014 11:07 a.m. PST

I only stifled people when they talked about stifling and then only until I got back on TMP the next day typically, although I confess I forgot a couple of times to unstifle them. Now that you can't see your own count there is no point.

Garand29 Sep 2014 11:15 a.m. PST

I've only ever stifled a couple of people, mainly known instigators of little added value…

Damon.

Gone Fishing29 Sep 2014 11:35 a.m. PST

I've never stifled anyone. The free exchange of ideas is an important thing. Having said that, there need to be expectations in terms of civility (one reason I avoid Frothers), and I approach the Ultra-Modern board with extreme caution…

7. Stifled and Ignored one person temporarily so I could get screen shots of the stifle interface to help the Celestial Lord High Editor write some FAQ stuff.

Other than that, 1.

I consider obnoxious louts an opportunity to practice self-control and calmingly releasing stress into the Universe. That's right. Bleeped text the Universe. Let it suck up all the stress and get ulcers.

RavenscraftCybernetics29 Sep 2014 12:03 p.m. PST

When I stifle, it is not a sin…
The stiflee has sinned.

boy wundyr x29 Sep 2014 12:20 p.m. PST

My few permanent stiflees (most get pardoned under #5 the next time I remember to look at the list) were those who made really unpleasant comments about others' efforts at miniatures (like "that's a lousy paint job").

Usually the comments weren't even applicable (the paint jobs were decent) and just seemed to be out of spite, and were directed at nice guys who are productive members of this community.

Dr Mathias Fezian29 Sep 2014 12:25 p.m. PST

I've stifled people, but I find the 'stifled' message breaking the thread continuity far more annoying than whatever that person might have said. So I stopped stifling.

I have never used the button. I did (and probably still do)have quite a few though :-)

I usually just stifle the closet anti-semites though I did stifle quite a few folks during the Frothers Time. 'Cuz they were dicks.

skippy000129 Sep 2014 3:16 p.m. PST

I was going to stifle everyone here for bringing the stifle debate back but I have never stifled or ignored anyone and I hate to break a streak so I am not-stifling stifle commentators probably out of spite about stifling in the first place. So there.

14Bore29 Sep 2014 3:24 p.m. PST

1, I am afraid I might miss something.

Jo Jo the Idiot Circus Boy29 Sep 2014 3:44 p.m. PST

Eh.
I got a handful of stifles over the years, but I never actually stifled anyone else. It's not some point of pride with me or "chest thumping". I just never saw the sense in it. (I never resorted to "kill files" back when I was on USENET either) There is another factor to consider as well. Most of our trolls here on TMP are not the hard core "just here to anger and annoy" sorts you see on other sites. Most of our trolls are just clowns with a low signal-to-noise ratio. Even these guys will occasionally post something useful, so I don't stifle them.

Now on the other hand, I have pulled the trigger and hit the "report" button and/or emailed Armintrout three or four times (I don't recall the exact number) when someone got truely out of hand. Happily each time I did this, I would later see that miscreant in the DH for the post I reported. But I've never felt the need to follow it up with an actual stifle.

Finally, I fully agree that removing public access to stifle counts was a good thing. "Wall of shame" type things like that (while amusing to some) only encourage bad behavior amongst some people. So it's best not to have them.

Back out of retirement. What does it matter? You and others can't see them and they in no effect have anybody. And yes in the over 10 years I have been here I have Stifled many. And I do Ignore too. Do I keep count? Naw. What would the point be? And neither do I thump my chest and proclaim that I do or don't Stifle either. I have never understood some of our members fascination or even obsession with them. Rant over. Opinion stated and Stifles, and I will never see them anyway, are ready to be taken. And BTW My photo is in no way to be taken as telling anyone to shut up but to just let it go.

ordinarybass29 Sep 2014 5:23 p.m. PST

I guess #3.

I don't even remember what it was they said, but it was notably offensive so took a quick look at the rest of their posts and realized this was not someone who had posted a single thing that I wanted to read and some of it was downright rude.

So I gave my first and only stifle.

Using stifle is just like deciding that there's someone who you choose to never be near enough to hear what they are saying.

nazrat29 Sep 2014 5:36 p.m. PST

I am without sin, so I will happily cast the first stone! 8)=

Never stifled anyone.

I have the emotional fortitude to either skip posts that don't interest me or read them and shrug it off.

MacrossMartin29 Sep 2014 11:25 p.m. PST

The day that ignoring an idiot is a sin, is the day that I finally renounce all religion.

And just possibly, take up arms!

ubercommando30 Sep 2014 2:43 a.m. PST

When I first joined, I stifled 3 people because they were out and out hostile and I'd only been on TMP for a week and posted about 3 things…two of them in support of Flames of War.

About a year ago I had an amnesty and un-stifled them and vowed not to use the function again as it seemed a bit mean and petty. Funnily enough, I haven't encountered overt hostility towards me since.

Abwehrschlacht30 Sep 2014 3:06 a.m. PST

Never stifled anyone, even the ones that call me an 'arseclown'.

OSchmidt30 Sep 2014 7:10 a.m. PST

I don't remember ever stifling or ignoring anyone. I picked up a huge pile of stifles though.

My reasons for never stifling or ignoring anyone is that you never know when someone is going to come out with a good idea or a clever observation. Even a busted clock can be right twice a day. Besides, none of us is perfect and it is often good to have people give an unvarnished opinion. As adults we must be able to take feedback and separate the malicious from the well mean't and honest.

Besides, this is a list dedicated to a silly, stupid hobby where we engage with each other for enjoyment. We have to learn to behave and deal with others. If we cannot do this on a list dedicated to a silly, stupid, hobby then however will we be able to engage with each other when politics, religion, philosophy, or the great issues are involved.

#3 to keep my frontpage clear of non wargaming news

Robert Kennedy30 Sep 2014 12:47 p.m. PST

Well I guess it's a good thing now that the only people who will ever see any one stifled is the who does it. So there shouldn't be a problem anymore. It will be unknown to all but to God.
