"You would think war-themed video games copy real life, and not the other way around. Not this time. A Washington think tank has hired the maker of the acclaimed "Call of Duty" game to envision the kind of future wars the US could be fighting.

The key reason for this, according to the Atlantic Council think tank, is that, with all its money and capabilities, America really isn't thinking creatively about the various threats it could face in the 21st century.

Dave Anthony, the creator of the billion-dollar Call of Duty franchise, will be joining other authors, screenwriters and entertainment figures in an initiative called 'The Art of Future War Project,' set to launch next week, according to AFP…"

I have my suspicions that this is very closely connected to the upcoming Call of Duty sci-fi game and serves as a means of generating some buzz around the game's launch.

And the creator of Grand Theft Auto will be coming onboard to advise on the budget deficit.

By saying a Pentagon think tank hires this guy, it sounds like it's an official government agency. Whereas it just seems like a Beltway bandit type consulting firm.

They must be worried the game will be seen as a re-tread with a tired operating system, some graphics updates and a few multi-player goodies, to generate this buzz.

Charitably, I'd guess they might want to compare conclusion from their future wars department and a group who have steeped themselves in all the open source trends of future war. Then again, they might want to look at future designs, given the pedigree of the CoD department.

That's as dumb as CNN hiring Jim Dunnigan to explain the First Gulf War using GHQ miniatures.

On second thought, it's dumber, since taxpayer money is involved.

I'm not a fan of the "plots" in these games. They're often derivative and involve typical Clancy-esque cliches such as "stolen nukes" or "rogue generals."

You seldom get "random fundamentalist jihadi group funded by Saudis and Qataris" or "non-kinetic goading for resources ala Spratley Islands."

As for Art Of Future War,I wonder if it's going to be a guy with an Ak-47 versus some other guy with an Ak-47 with an American MQ-1 floating around launching Hellfires at demographically determined targets.

After all I don't see video gaming nerds particularly interested in this:
