Has anyone come across any references to the colour of uniforms for artillerymen during the ECW? If so, what is it?

They didn't have uniforms, they were civilians mostly.

Thank you. That is what I thought . . . but my thoughts are often wrong so I figured that it was worth asking about.

Does anyone wish to confirm or contradict this?

I agree with Pictors. Their clothing might well be dark as their profession was inherently dirty.

ECW artillery were civies. Do whatever colors you'd like. Browns, tans, and grays would work.

I'm wondering if artillerymen would wear the coloured sashes of king or parliament?

Timbo W29 Sep 2014 2:29 a.m. PST

Not sure iif they wore sashes, my feeling is it'd be unlikely for the ordinary gunners etc but quite possible for the officers, these were professionals, often foreign, and relatively highly paid, eg Bernard de gomme etc.

Agreed, unlikely any uniforms of the gunners etc. Good point about the sash though but I would think only the officers or higher ranks would wear them

In the Osprey book "English Civil War Artillery 1642-51" on the colour plate B there is an image of a crew at the battle of edge hill here the officer is wearing an orange sash the majority of the others are wearing buff vests. The write up for the plate sadly does not address the dress of the characters in the picture.

Would some (at least) of the ordinary gunners/mattrosses be recruited from among the infantry – subject to a bit of "health & safety" workshopping?
