I have been a Star Trek fan since Next Gen came out in the 80's and have never found a decent set of rules for starship gaming. Just wondering what A Call to Arms by Mongoose is like?

It's fast playing and easy to pick up. Special orders for your ships are a critical part of play.

For Star Trek either it or the Star Fleet/Starmada rulebook are a good fit.

I like Federation Commander but it's a very "crunchy" game and not exactly amenable to large fleet battles.

I second what Warlock said.It was quick to learn and fast to play.

I've lost track; are these being re-written by ADB?

I think there was a reboot, either rules and/or casts.

Yes I thought I saw that Steve Cole was working on it in the latest update. Don't know the due date.

Word is they are updating them and fixing some issues, due out sometime later this year apparently…though I'm not holding my breath. I'd be happy if they just get released at some point, I like the fact that you can do fleet sized battles in an hour or two.

As to the OP, here's my take:
I like the fact that it isn't played on a hex map.
It gives a good overall Star Trek feel.
It doesn't require 6+ hours to play like Star Fleet Battles.
It allows you to use quite a few ships per side (8+ easy).
It doesn't get bogged down in energy allocation minutia (Star Trek ship simulator by Fasa).
My group can play a good sized game with plenty of ships in 2-3 hours max.

On a side note, I still like Fasa's simulator on occasion but you can't use too many ships without bogging down the game.

SVC's post on Facebook about it said they are about half way through the editing process. The 1.2 version is supposed to be out before the end of the year.

The "rules part" of the reworking has been sent to the ACTASF staff as of this afternoon. It doesn't have a lot of record-keeping and does handle multiple ships easily.

The miniatures are available directly from ADB.

Note that A call to arms is set in the star fleet universe which is based on the original series. If you want next gen stuff you should check out star trek attack wing.

Tim-yeah I knew it was set in the original series. I've seen the mini's on the site, look good. I tried Attack Wing and wasn't too keen on it. Some things about that game that I don't think are right in ship stats is all.

Doug,

Okay as long as you know. I'd wait for the updated version of ACTA-SF to come out. Or will clean up the game a fair bit.
