Howdie.

Looking at a new project. While there are a lot of really good 28mm Conan look a likes out there, I have had a hard time finding something suitable in a "simple" mail or scale shirt/vest. I tried looking through some older TMP threads on Conan figures, didn't catch anything.

The closest I have found so far is a figure in the Mirliton (old Fantasy Armies/Grenadier) barbarian range (most are bare torsoed, but looks like 2 are figures in mail shirts without beards).

Curious if anyone has any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I was going to suggest the old Grenadier/Mirliton/em4 Barbarians, but you headed me off at the pass. grin

This guy is great:

That pic is from the em4 site.

The Hersey Boris figure might work.

This Conan look-alike by Bronze Age Miniatures has to be one of my favourites – sadly he is not wearing any armour . . . but hey, this is Conan, when did a Cimmerian need armour!

Reaper has a few unarmored miniatures that would work great as Conan, too…. but none that I found in a simple shirt or vest.

From the stories, I think if you find Conan in armour, he's probably also wearing a helmet, which makes finding figures a bit easier as that broadens what works, but on the other hand it'd only be Conan because you said it was.

I'm thinking of Scarlet Citadel, Black Colossus, Hour of the Dragon specifically, when he's armoured up for big battles, but maybe he is without a helm, Howard did like to throw "black-maned" around.

Yea I think you cannot do much better than the old Mark Copplestone figures that are now available through Mirliton.

In the image below the second one from the right might fit the bill nicely. Not only does he have chainmail on but has a round shield strapped to his back and is of course caring the big ax.

No chainmail but another great Conan-like miniature from Mirliton.

And while not Conan per se I have always liked the figure and have him as my main D&D Barbarian character. This is also another Mirliton figure.

And this Mirliton figure could be Conan as king.

Well this did add a few more figures to look at. Thanks for the help.

There seem to be dozens of half naked Conans, armoured ones are a bit rarer. Quick search of Reaper finds this rather nice sculpt in scale shirt.

You guys need to reread the Conan books. As King of Aquilonia, Conan mostly took to the field in full plate black armour. He was often depicted in the books in mail byrnie and at least fully clothed otherwise.

Twilight: Honestly thought that was a half-orc or something, ha ha…. but you are right, scale mail, that could work, I'd feel like trimming the nose just a bit.

djb: that's what I was thinking. Lots of stories have him in short sleeved or sleeveless mail or scale (REH seemed to not always differentiate the two) shirt, very frequently in a helmet with short bull horns.

In several stories its noted as being different than those around him (Beyond the Black River, for example, he is the only ranger able to wear armor without making extra noise).

As boy wundyr said above "it would only be Conan because you said it was", in that light I will probably get some of the old Fantasy Army style/Mirliton miniatures and pick a couple for Conan, paint the rest for "random barbarian encounter" and see what happens.

Ask Dave at Bronze Age minis. I've asked about some scale/chain armoured barbs in the past. They were a possibility for him. I currently use 1 of his figs with a horned helmet but, alas, no armour. Perhaps with some more encouragement??? He's a great bloke.
