Oh man, the late, lamented Polk's; an absolute wonderland when my Dad used to take us to New York. Polk's seemingly had everything. Its good to hear that there are hobby stores still in existence outside Manhattan though. |

Compleat Strategist had two locations at one time, one of them was further uptown. I liked the second location as it wasn't as cramped and I remember it having a bigger selection of boardgames. FAO Schwarz had an interesting gaming section around 25 years ago, they stocked Avalon Hill, GDW and others. |

Ah, Polk's, the place that got me started gaming. |

Compleat Strategist on 33rd. Still my ideal of a game store with odds and ends packed away and old treasures waiting to be discovered.I think I went there a total of two times, but man that place made an impact. And the uptown location was nice – much more similar to a suburban hobby shop in space and feel. |

The Uptown location was IIRC on 59th St. I bought some 15mm minfig ACW there. |

Actually Strategist had 3 stores in the "Golden Age". A tiny one in Rockefeller Center with mostly board games. Uptown had more historical miniatures (minifigs) and was wider than a subway car. |

Started playing with my first club at the Strategist in the mid '70's-vivid memories! |

Great article! Never been to New York, but this brings back memories of many places I have been over the years, as well as mail ordering from Polk's. Grelber |

Brilliant article! Makes me nostalgic for the hobby store of my youth and wonder if there's little shops hidden away here in Chicago that I don't know about. |

Ah, the Strat. I loved that place when I worked in Manhattan. |

Wonderful article. Gee, I wish I had the wherewithal to quite my job and start my own game/hobby store. How many of us has spent an idle moment or two, planning their perfect hobby/game store, ignoring the hard work and capital required to start up. I also remember SPI in the 1970s was place to purchase the latest history board game and to play them on certain nights. A few years ago my favorite hobby shop closed down in my town. I got some good bargains in their going out of business sale. But I would trade that for them to still be in business. |
