These are both available as Kindle books. Which should I get first?

Showalter's "Tannenberg, Clash of Empires"

Buttar's "Collision of Empires, War of the Eastern Front 1914"

Yes, I realize one covers the whole front and the other just one campaign. Hmm, and they also have Showalter's Frederick the Great.

Showalter is always good. But get Buttars 1914. I learned more about the Eastern front in 1914 then any other book I have read. Just the best military book I have read this year. I understand the front so much better now.

Showalters Frederick the great would be the second best this year by the way.

I second the recommendation for Buttar's book.

Hi, I own them all. I'm reading Buttar's book right now. I'd still try and get Tannenberg. It really opened my eyes to the Campaign in the East.

I had thought that the Germans were always in control and faced no serious threat from the Russians in 1914. Tannenberg makes it very clear that this is totally untrue. The Russians were viewed as a Juggernaut. The Russians also seemed to have some momentum on their side. Heck, the German CnC wanted to totally fallback which was partially why he was relieved. The Tanneberg campaign was a very dicey situation and could have turned out very different.

The Buttar book was only a couple of bucks on my Kindle.

Thanks,

John

Good choice!

I got them all too and it is hard to choose which is the best, they are all good treatments of their subject matter.
