At Hastings 2006, I was entertained and aghast to observe pairs of East European types going at it full blows style. This was auxiliary to the reenactment of the battle and was evidently motivated by frustration with the "namby-pamby" limited blows of rebated steel "combat" used by the Vikings and other similar reenactment groups. The "eastern" guys wanted to FIGHT, and so they did. Shields were riven, helms dinted, but few bodies bruised and I saw none broken. They covered up too well for that, being satisfied to admit defeat when outmaneuvered enough to risk serious injury. How they pulled that off without accident, at least while I was watching, I have no idea. It looked far too serious for me!…

Thanks for the link 14bore. Katy, one of the young ladies interviewed, lives about 20 miles from me. She belongs to the local HEMA group. I was able to contact her and went to my first practice tonight where she began my introduction to Longsword technique. It was awesome. I've finally found an exercise I'll look forward to, and it's cheaper than any gym in the area.
