Hi, all, I'm interested in finding a 28mm terror bird. What's that, You might ask? See link below

link

That's roughly what we're talking about here, and roughly the size.

Any ideas where to find large flightless bird with a gigantic beak in this scale? Toy conversion ideas welcome

As always thanks in advance

Reaper makes a couple of them and Dragonblood minis made a very nice resin one, but they are out of business now I think.

Here's a good starting point:

Also, check out the Ral Partha one:

There was a kickstarter that turned out to be a giant scam. Just to warn you in case you see that online.

The "Very True Things" site is useful to find prehistoric miniatures: link . Though I note that many of the manufacturers of Diatryma or Phororhacos are no longer in production, so you may need to search for store end-of-ranges or buy 2nd hand models.

Was it something called Cave Wars? I think I remember its existence, but not the scam.

Walt,

Lol. Cave Wars is not a scam!!!

It's just a bunch of gamers coming together in a yahoo group to talk about all things relating to prehistoric gaming:

Copplestone miniatures has a large one in his caveman line

Got a bunch of these Terror birds at Historicon. Dealer had the tiny wings in a separate bag. There is a skeleton of one at the Field Museum in Chicago, to which I pay homage each visit. Andalgalornis ferox. Top Predator in South America. Could sprint at forty miles an hour to catch and stun prey with its sharp beak. Lived in the Philocene ear 5.4 to 1.8 million years ago.

Wonder if Ral Partha could tell us if they were tasty?

John the OFM18 Sep 2014 9:17 a.m. PST

Taste like chicken.

I got mine years ago, and painted them canary yellow.
Now to paint Hitler, so I can finally use them in a game.

nazrat18 Sep 2014 10:08 a.m. PST

Wackamole-- I thought the same thing but he must have moved or removed them from his catalogue. I can't find them anywhere there.

Here's a painted Partha/Iron Wind Metals one with a 28mm scale Crocodile Games mini for an idea of scale.

Some morepics of it here link

I think I based it on a 30mmx40mm base.

IWM has some others that are a little smaller than this guy but I can't find any of my pics of one of those right now.

Turtle is totally wrong about that KS (ADWGames), it is extremely disorganised and very amateurish but not a scam. The team running it are genuinely trying to get it back on track and work through the problems.

Object lesson for project owners on how not to run a campaign (or a business really). Next update is due tomorrow on both it and the Sea Monsters campaign so will see if they come up with anything.

Safari ltd, and Schleich, maybe Papo also. Make various oviraptor types which can be quite nice. Might seem a bit large but I like them.

Oh, I hoped that this would be about the Ajntimatter Space Buzzard from "The Giant Claw"!

Castings, Inc. made a mold with one. Maybe a little small for 28mm but was perfect for 1/72 riders.

I hope ADW is able to get things back on track.

They have some nice designs.

To be fair, there aren't that many battleships in 28mm, unless you scratchbuild them.

Re : The Giant Claw…

When I was in kindergarten my babysitter let me watch the movie after much pleading….

Scared me so much I walked to school backwards for a couple of weeks.

I just knew that bird was coming for me…

Copplestone used to make a beautiful terror bird. Sadly, it is no longer listed on their website. You could always write and ask them, or check e-bay or even post an ad on TMP.

Copplestone's Diatryma has a larger body than the one Reaper sells; the proportions were much more believable.

While I'd like to keep both my birds, they came with eggs, and I'd be happy to sell/trade/send you a set of eggs.

How about varnished Cornish game hens?

RobH24 Sep 2014 7:02 a.m. PST

@Turtle: I belive I owe you an apology for my comment above. It would appear that the ADWGames people are indeed running a scam…….but not against the KS backers as such.

Looks as if they are using the KS and the phony business set up behind it to scam business investment from commercial investors, the KS backers are "collateral damage" and a bit of pocket cash. The coments on the IAM kickstarter are totally surreal, and now have postings of messages from prior victims of these people.

Hopefully someone catches up with them and gives them the kicking they deserve, scum

I was in on the ADW KS. The recent developments are a highly entertaining work in the surrealistic genre.

I've just contacted my credit card for a chargeback. They gave me my money right back and filed a dispute with KS on my behalf to seal the deal.

So now I just get to make popcorn and follow the ongoing charades!

Probably more like ostrich, wouldn't it?

TOOB

Go to any place that sells these toys, AC Moore etc. and you will find models suitable for 28mm
