"A new Navy warship noteworthy for several reasons – chief among them its iconic name, America – arrived in its home port of San Diego on Monday.

In addition to its special moniker, the America is a modern first – a U.S. amphibious assault ship with a big flight deck but no "well deck."

That means the ship cannot launch the kind of landing craft that Marines use to storm beaches…"

I still can't believe that the Marines allowed the Navy to build an 'Amphibious Assault' ship that doesn't have any amphibious capabilities.

I get that the Marine Expeditionary Units have a battalion of troops and one company flies, one goes in via AAV, and the third goes in via landing craft.

In the 60's through 90's the USN had LPH's, amphibious ships without well decks for vertical envelopment, this one is basically the same.

Because the Corps screamed long and loud that the air component wasn't getting enough respect. So America is the answer. NOW they're screaming that it doesn't have a well deck. Like a spoiled brat, they want EVERYTHING NOW. Or they throw a tantrum…
