Does anyone have a reference for paint schemes for the Italian capital ships of World War I? I am doing them in 1/2400 so I really am looking for hull color, decks, turrets/superstructure, funnels colors. Any advice is appreciated! |

The quote below is taken from an article on WWI camouflage written by Mal Wright: Italy used very dark blue-grey in the early period, but went to pale grey later. The shade of pale grey was so pale as to appear almost white in some photographs. In some cases, ships in northern Italian waters were painted dark grey during winter, and pale grey during summer. The turret tops were painted in dark grey in all schemes. Many upper-deck horizontal surfaces were painted dark grey. Black was commonly used around the funnels and areas where coal was loaded. Decks were smartly cleaned, and appear very pale (as with British and German ships that had been holystoned). If you want, I can send you a copy of the article. BWW |

Brian, that would be great to have the article, if it's not too much trouble. Thanks very much! Rob |

You could try this site, but presumably most images are from orthochromatic B&W film (instead of panchromatic), and should be interpreted accordingly. link Mark |

Oh man, Mark, that is a very cool site! You're right…one can make their own interpretations of the colors, but wow…what a wealth of info and just downright "coolness" on the site! Thank you! |

Mal's camouflage article is here on TMP but I don't have the link here. You gotta love the spell checker here. It turned Mal into Mao. |
