I have come to realize that the reason many of us choose periods, armies, and scales is because of some detail of appearance that somehow strikes us as pleasing. Some choose their armies on this basis alone. For example some of us love crested helmets from the British Legion to Württembergers simply because we love the look of them. Others have a fondness for British redcoats or Prussian bluecoats because those are such striking and evocative colors. For others uniform details are important for the sake of historical accuracy. Still others simply paint their units they way they think looks best, but still care about appearance, even if the units and uniforms are fictional.

These things seem as true for vehicles as they do for individuals soldiers. So I ask you:

What is your favorite aircraft roundel?

I like the Polish red and white "roundel".

I prefer the old Republic of China roundelfrom the 1930s and 1940s. link

It was used by, among others, the American Volunteer Group (The Flying Tigers)

I believe Taiwan still uses it as well.

The Polish countercharged roundel is tied for a distant 2nd for me, tied with the North and South Korean roundels.

For those that may need help finding help in choosing one they've seen but cannot identify (or those who just want to look at nifty roundels) these are useful:

I really like the US interwar roundel:

I'm biased but I like the Canadian one.

It's a pain to explain to non-wargamers/history buffs, but I also like the WWII Finnish roundels, and the Dutch/NEI upside-down-orange-triangle is a nice change of pace too.

Anyone know the story behind Uruguay's? It looks like they're against the country with the blue-white-blue horizontal roundel.

You have to hope Paraguay and France never go to war with each other. Might get confusing!

Best one is Australia. Why? Cos it's got a KANGAROO on it!!!!
