What did they wear ? Caps ? bonnets ? Lights of 71st are sometimes shown in crested helmets but these are from later period and service in India… |

link Here are some good paintings that should help answer your questions. Of course it depends on what year/campaign too, at least in the kilts vs overalls question. |

Nice pictures, unfortunatelly nothing in the subject. |

Then I'm not sure what your question is? Highland lights might have worn a different color feather but that would be about it, except perhaps wings on the coats and black leather equipment. Those hats pictured are what they wore. |

I know how the Scottish bonnet looked like. I wasn't sure if light bobs wore it. Guys on your photos use a kind of bonnet (looking a bit different than "regular" one). |

Those guys are the 84th, so I would go with the hat pictured in the Troiani paintings for lights in the 42nd, 71st, 74th. |

There are recorded/paintings of Highland regiments with cap/helmets for the light company, but I expect these were for formal wear only. |

I would have thought the 42nd and 71st would have worn the bonnet in the field, as a mark of their status – although that said, they weren't that fussed about losing the kilt and the broadsword. |
