This term seems to have disappeared from common use. Sometime last century, the "Middle East", which to me should be the area between the Near East and the Far East, seems to have taken over as the term to describe Near Eastern nations. My guess is that the Near East should be brought back to describe Turkey, Syria, Israel, Jordan, and possibly Egypt, Iraq and the Arabian peninsular. Of course it won't happen :-) |

I grew up in former Yugoslavia. There,we called it The Near East. Now I live in Canada wher we call it The Middle East.I guess it has to do with geographical proximity to the place.Next week,I will travel to the old place and visit my parents.I will call it The Near East(Bliski Istok),again. |

I rather think it depends where you live. Weren't the old terms coined in relation to Rome? (or Byzantium?? I can't recall and can't bothered to google it). |
