I ordered a bag of the new separate heads (9 Heads for $3.00 USD) from All The Kings Men with my last order.

I knew they could add variety to any current AWI ATKM figure but wanted to see how they would scale in and work with the Imex hard plastic figures.

The heads are well cast, no flash and have good facial expressions.

The Imex 1/32nd Scale American Militia box set comes with figures in multiples of 4 of the same pose. One of them looks like Ben Franklin on a bad day. So, I picked that one for a test conversion.

The pictures show how it came out. I removed the head with a Zona Saw and cleaned up the area with a #11 Blade in a Hot Knife. This would be the most difficult removal in the set as the musket rests on the shoulders and as cast is attached to the head.

The Imex figures are hard enough so that all I had to do is mark and then drill a hole with my Dremel. The only thing left to do is make a collar out of Epoxy Sculpt.

I will be ordering more.

Recommended.

J. P. Kelly

Looks good. I was glad to see you removed the hat from his hand. :-)

It does look good. You should've left the hat in his hand and stood him in front of a mirror, like he was trying to decide which hat was best for the revolution.

Perhaps he'd picked up a British officer's cocked hat from the battlefield as a trophy?

Have to admit, after I looked at it I placed in on the bench: I did forget and had to go back and remove the hat!

Looks good, Joe! An easy way to make the collar is run a bead of white glue around the neck with a toothpick where metal and plastic meet. It blends them together without having to resort to putty.

The size and shape of the head is spot on. Looking good! How long did the whole thing take?

Ken: I'll try that with the white glue.

WATJ: first one took 30 mins. (I had the Hot Knife on and the Dremel on the work bench). The other figures in the Imex set all have the muskets in either both or one hand so they should take even less.

Do you plan a counter-weight on the base of the converted figure?

Is it now a bit top-heavy following the conversion?

Joes Shop Supporting Member of TMP14 Sep 2014 8:33 a.m. PST

dBerczerk: good question. I mount my 54's individually on 1.25" square 3mm Litko bases and use Pumice Gel as a terrain base. I thought the added weight of the metal head might be an issue too.

But, the Imex figures are made with a very dense, heavy plastic (compared to AIP and other brands) and there is to 'tipping' issue with the added head.
