Godfrey of Bouillon's helmet is a full century out of date! Just had to point that out. Nice leader figure, regardless…. |

[Godfrey of Bouillon's helmet is a full century out of date! Just had to point that out. Nice leader figure, regardless….] Why is that? it is a simple face plate, the sculpter has replicated a Siculo Norman helm which appeared around 1120. So only 20 years out.

David Nicolle dates the Carved Column Capitals in the Cloister of Monreale Cathedral near Palermo in Sicily as 1174 to 1182 AD. They may be even later as the cloister was added in a later phase. Here are some late 12th century images of soldiers with helms with simple facemasks attached: Murder of Becket, Spoleto, Italy, late 12th-century Murder of Thomas Becket, BL Harley 5102, England, last quarter of the 12th century 'Rolandslied', Song of Roland, Regensburg, Germany, late 12th-century Carved Column Capitals in the Cloister of Monreale Cathedral near Palermo in Sicily, 1174 to 1182 AD Wall paintings of knights in All Saints Church, Claverley, Shropshire, featuring face-mask visors. and possibly Effigy of Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex, 12th-13th century
