It has been a year since I last did a ancient historical replay with my fast rules for playing on a 2'x2' board. It seemed a lot shorter. I did some playtests of a programmable opponent in April and since then my brain has been mulling over some ways to streamline the rules themselves.

I got distracted by WW2 skirmish but over the last five weeks I have spent most of my free time streamlining the rules. I firstly created a one page QRS from memory on what I thought the rules were. I then checked the QRS against the rules and mostly aligned the rules to what I had written in the QRS. I reduced the core rules by about 7-10% and the old QRS was 2 pages in two columns and is now 1 page in 3 columns. I am a lot happier with e rules. They were starting to get bloated and I did not like it. While 95% of the game is the same, 5% has gone, making it slightly simpler – I reduced modifiers to and rules exceptions. If you want the details look here but only for diehards:

Back to Chaeronea. The first historical replay with the slightly modified rules went well with the Greek general being destroyed causing most of the Greek army to fade away:

Welcome back Shaun – it's good to see another of these!

Thanks Paul. Reading battle reports on various blogs such as yours has "forced" me to come back. I never really went away in my mind – I really did not realise until a few weeks ago it has been a year!

Nice one Shaun – you can't go wrong with Xyston figs, either!

Shaun, can't believe a year has passed, but maybe some advantages for you in coming back fresh to your rules. I like the way that the game is so action packed. The morale check after leader loss feels like a good change – also lovely figures.

The figures are amazing. I bought them of Andy Bryant (some of you may remember him when he was living in the UK before seeing the light and moving to Oz). I could not resist. They are the best painted figures i have!

"Generals are not permanently attached to units…." in the details changes section should read "Generals are now permanently attached to units…" shouldn't it?

[There is always someone who feels challenged)

Your blog is one of my favourites… glad your are back!

Well spotted. The 'not' should be a 'now'…"Generals are now permanently attached to units". I changed it, and also took the opportunity to say "permanently attached to a unit" instead. Ta.
