FWIW, the cavalry units in Pershing's expedition into Mexico in pursuit of Pancho Villa carried the Patton saber but the ones that weren't abandoned were sent to the rear because they were seen as an unnecessary encumbrance. There were a number of mounted charges made during this campaign but to the best of my knowledge they were all made with pistols. LT |

I remember one book that claims the "lunge to the right rear" position was used to parry a lance attack and ride below it in order to riposte. It did have photos of that maneuver, but I can't find it online. |
