I bought a battery of 25 pdr's and want to paint them up in 8th Army "Western Desert" colors. What Vallejo Model color paint should I use to paint the ammo boxes for the 25 pdr's? Thanks and salut y'all! Bruce the Texas Grognard |

Are you talking about the 'limbers' – the 2 wheeled trailer that went between the tow and the gun? The ammunition was stored in open topped trays inside the limber and sometimes the 'Hogg platform' was stowed on top of the limber instead of under the gun. These would be painted to match the rest of the unit – sand, olive, bronze green. If you are talking about general ammunition boxes – about 18" x 18" x 24-30" steel crates, and not particularly artillery, then they could be a number of colours including red-brown (zinc primer) or if they had been 'in theatre' for a while they were likely to have been re-painted by the owning unit in the same base color as the rest of the vehicles, so sand in the desert and back to olive or bronze green in Europe. |

Probably repainted for the desert but 25pr ammo boxes were SCC 2 as manufactured from '41 onward same goes for wooden ammo crates. |

As No.4 says; chocolate brown is the traditional colour for ammunition boxes. |
