Spotted this today on the sub-reddit "Today I Learned" link So, by default there was a process of conception, experimentation and evaluation whereby the Croatian Ustaše sought to streamline the process of mass throat slitting. It really makes your blood run cold. |

Very dark history in the Balkans and long, long memories. Puts more contemporary horrors in context, rather than appearing out-of-the-blue aberrations as the Western Media tended to portray them. |

I would be the first to acknowledge that the horrors of man's mistreatment of his fellow man would appear to be limitless, but I am skeptical that mass throat-cutting would be the way to efficiently kill lots of people. The record-holding killer of all time, iirc, was an NKVD executioner, and he used a pistol. The Germans, with a reputation for efficiency, used gas. Basically, you slit a lot of throats, you get tired quickly. And pretty soon, you want to just start shooting people. Faster and easier, and pistol ammunition wasn't scarce in WW2. |

The Ustaše did adopt gas after the Germans worked it out. They also used cremation ovens on living victims. However, they seem to have preferred manual methods, seeing it as a form of sport. Testimony from witnesses and perpetrators confirms this. |

Probably why the knife was mfgred as part of a supporting glove, so you didn't tire, and could not let it go or get it taken from you. I believe it was done to maximize the psychological effect on those witnessing. Mass throat-slitting, with subsequent suffering and bleed-out, as compared to execution by pistol (which is a quick death) or death hidden behind closed doors of a gas chamber must have had a BRUTAL effect on those awaiting, "their," turn. |

I would be surprised if anyone could come up with documentation that the Croatians used throat-slitting as a means of mass, assembly-line murder. Say more than 100 at a time. |

I believe it was done to maximize the psychological effect on those witnessing. A lesson not lost on many today … look at what is going on in the Middle East. It is a good bad example … |

Say more than 100 at a time. When you put it like that, it doesn't seem so bad. |
