I remember hearing good things about Taliman, then i actually had a chance to play it. It basically felt like a more complex version of sorry rather than the wacky adventure promised me.
So how is Spacehulk compared to similar games like Zombicide or Level seven: Omega protocol?

kallman09 Sep 2014 11:07 a.m. PST

I think the basic game if still available would be fun to play along with the supplements. The reboot of the game that came out in limited numbers was an improvement and a ton of fun to play. So yes I would say the concept has aged well and is one of those games I would be happy to pull out and enjoy.

JezEger09 Sep 2014 11:10 a.m. PST

Talisman is not a tactical game. Go round the board, pick stuff up at random. Fun for a while, but gets old quick.
Space Hulk is a classic, hasn't aged a day. Simple rules, lots of drama (oh no I jammed!) huge replay. I personally didn't like the hybrids expansion as I thought it complicated a good system by giving the enemy ranged weapons. In the classic, one side kills at range and clears a path, the other tries to overwhelm you in close combat. If your perimeter is penetrated, you're in big trouble. It is a bit similar in feel to Zombiecide in that respect, both great games.

Isn't there a rumor that they are releasing the latest version again with a few extra bits ?
I guess when GW needs some new money they can always bring SH back, indeed a great game..

That is the current rumor as of yesterdays video teaser.

I guess when GW needs some new money they can always bring SH back, indeed a great game..

That is the current common response.

I loved the first version and liked some of the changes in the third. Second version had crappy rules, but good pieces.

I still have my original with deathwing and genestealer addons. I also have a copy of the third version.

seldonH09 Sep 2014 11:31 a.m. PST

I stand with you.. I have the same versions… For the first one I think we even have some rules to use regular marines rather than terminators..

Incursion from Grindhouse games has similar mechanics and is a fun game, unfortunately they are still working to get the new edition out.. hopefully it will work for them…

thanks for the update haywire

cheers
Francisco

Some discussion already going on here too: TMP link

Caesar09 Sep 2014 12:24 p.m. PST

It is a classic. The asymmetric sides, the claustrophobic environment, the right balance of random elements and its limited nature make for a tense and fun game.

ming3109 Sep 2014 12:25 p.m. PST

I still like to play .

Mithmee09 Sep 2014 12:33 p.m. PST

Yup, just know that the chances of your 5-10 guys all coming back out live is…

Slim to none.

Still have my 1st Edition copy from 25 years ago.

It got me into Warhammer 40K and Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

Then GW hosed over both games.

Privateer4hire09 Sep 2014 12:35 p.m. PST

Caesar, you noted "its limited nature". Did you mean time for the Space Marines to act is limited or the fact the game itself can be harder to acquire (cost, rarity, etc.)? Just curious.

Caesar09 Sep 2014 12:50 p.m. PST

Hi, Privateer4hire. I meant it is restricted in scope, it is best with well developed scenarios on set board configurations. It is a board game, rather than the more open possibilities of miniatures games and that is a good thing in this case as it forces players to focus on their tactical situation in the constrained environment.

Privateer4hire09 Sep 2014 1:00 p.m. PST

Got it and agree. Thanks.

JezEger09 Sep 2014 1:31 p.m. PST

There is an open ruleset called Space Hulk Bible. Lots of fansites out there too. Might be worth a look to get the feel of it.

Generalstoner4909 Sep 2014 4:21 p.m. PST

Space hulk is a great game, possibly one of the best GW has ever released. It has high replayability and is relatively simple and non-complex. Plus being able to finish a game in less than 2 hours with even a green group of players is great.

darthfozzywig09 Sep 2014 5:19 p.m. PST

I periodically introduce new players to Space Hulk and it's always a hit. It's a tense, tight game with a lot of replayability.

I rarely see a mission played without someone immediately saying "Ok, I want to try that again" or "Ok, let's switch sides this time."

And it plays fast enough that you can get in a few games in an evening.

The only GW game I have kept, great fun.

DuckanCover09 Sep 2014 6:24 p.m. PST

Closest thing one will ever get to "Aliens" as a boxed miniatures game. thumbs up

Space Hulk is one of my favorite games. I'll probably buy the new edition even though I don't need it.

Mithmee09 Sep 2014 7:42 p.m. PST

The only GW game I have kept, great fun.

Oh I have Horus Hersey 1st Edition as well.

Back from when GW was a good gaming company instead of the Evil Empire that it is now.

Turtle10 Sep 2014 3:50 a.m. PST

Space Hulk has aged well, however, it is a complex 2 player boardgame, some people have trouble finding an audience for those.

It's also a very specific game.

There's also that AvP game coming from Prodos, we'll see if that actually comes out.

parrskool10 Sep 2014 6:34 a.m. PST

If anyone in the uk wants to buy a copy, let me know.

Porkmann10 Sep 2014 12:28 p.m. PST

I am considering this for my kids. May beat monopoly and attendant brawls.

Citizen Kenau10 Sep 2014 9:27 p.m. PST

It is a classic and an absolute blast to play. I have played it countless times since the day sometime in the eighties that I bought it. It never bores.

Mithmee11 Sep 2014 1:46 p.m. PST

Going to get out my 1st Edition Copy and play it this weekend.

I expect lots of Genestealers and Space Marines dying.

firstvarty197915 Sep 2014 10:16 p.m. PST

Just saw the new announcement email. New box, with basically the same components is $125. USD That's about $50 USD too much for me.

M C MonkeyDew16 Sep 2014 4:26 a.m. PST

I was tempted to upgrade (I have the three original sets) for the board pieces but I really dislike the new genestealers. Too much ship and skulls attached to them. Find them distracting and a bit ugly.

No offense to anyone who likes them mind. Horses for courses.

Bob

Bryan Stroup16 Sep 2014 6:35 a.m. PST

I'm with ya, Bob. I use the new Termies from the 3rd set happily (I rebased them on nice resin tech bases), but the genestealers are still on the sprue. The original stealers are still my preference.

Xintao16 Sep 2014 8:23 a.m. PST

So much for Limited Edition.

Got my 2014 25th anniversary release and it's different than the 2009 20th anniversary release. Contains more tiles, new rooms, additional missions, boarding torpedoes, and higher quality components: the tiles, which were already phenomenal in 2009, are even better, with better color saturation.

The extra stuff includes:
10 extra tiles, 2 boarding torps and ramps, 4 breach counters and a 'turn' counter.

New room tiles:

1x big room
1x elevator
2x elevator entries
2x corridor end pieces
2x 1 square corridor
2x 2 squares corridor
2x torpedoes
2x torpedo ramps

One of the new tiles is a room that is exposed to space and exposes all adjacent tiles not closed off by a door to the vacuum of space!

Miniatures are exactly the same as the 2009 20th anniversary. Rules, apart from the addition of the new rooms and such, are largely unchanged from the 2009 release. This means that they are pretty much first edition rules, including the sand timer and such.

Overall, this is the single best release of Space Hulk. It is definitely worth $125 USD free shipping directly from GW and absolutely worth the $90 USD-$100 many online retailers were selling it at. However it's now out of stock pretty much everywhere.

I am personally getting some foam trays custom made that will fit inside the 2014 edition's box, as I have a set of 30 lead rogue trader genestealers and 20 lead rogue trader terminators as those are my favorite models.

Please reboot necromunda…only gw game I would buy in an instant…I'd probably snag a new space hulk…still have some corridors somewhere

Capt Flash24 Sep 2014 5:02 p.m. PST

The Time Machine in Manchester, Connecticut may have a copy or two left.
They do mail order. I won't post a link as I'm not sure it's allowed, but Google can help you…
Ok confirmed, there are several copies there.

Thornhammer26 Sep 2014 6:51 p.m. PST

At least one pretty major rule change – Space Marines on Overwatch are NOT required to fire. It's up to the Marine player.

That ruins a perfectly good Genestealer strategy.

Bryan Stroup27 Sep 2014 11:46 a.m. PST

A necrmunda reboot would be awesome. Especially if the same quality as space hulk (not Dreadfleet!)
