Watching the current national dialogue on domestic violence, it occurs to me once again that our hobby should be cleaned up a bit regarding some of its more juvenile and sexist elements.

While we need a board that discusses anatomy and sculpting, to name that board "Need More Boobies" is something we as a community can do without. If we need an "Adult Sculpting" board, that would still be better than using a name even my 12-year old is too mature to come up with.

John the OFM09 Sep 2014 10:01 a.m. PST

Have you been paying the slightest bit of attention to the Polls on this subject?
Saying you have Polls turned off is no excuse.

Here is the final one, ending today:

I have several items turned off because all of the spam postings by Tango cluttered my feed, and when we complained, we were told to manage our feeds and shut up. Ironic.

The Beast Rampant09 Sep 2014 10:20 a.m. PST

Do you not "ignore"? That seems a much better solution than switching off stuff you might otherwise enjoy.

leidang09 Sep 2014 10:36 a.m. PST

I hadn't seen the poll until now but I would have changed the "For Mature Viewers" option to "For Immature Viewers".

doug redshirt09 Sep 2014 10:45 a.m. PST

I dont like the Napoleonic board. Can we change it to the 2nd American War of Independence.

thank you, doug redshirt for giving words to my frustration.

Watching the current national dialogue on domestic violence

Certainly, an appropriate beginning for a topic on this site, which is widely known as a forum on such matters…
Or are you misguidedly attempting to connect domestic violence to a hobby website that has a page which features sculpted miniature statues in various states of undress? Do you also stand in your local art museum and monitor the dialogue of patrons viewing statues of naked people in the name of the national discourse on domestic violence?

it occurs to me once again that our hobby should be cleaned up a bit regarding some of its more juvenile and sexist elements.

still be better than using a name even my 12-year old is too mature to come up with.

Oh, it's not a matter of domestic violence that concerns you, after all, but merely a desire to curtail speech that you dislike and display your personal judgement of others.

benglish09 Sep 2014 12:16 p.m. PST

Great. Now even my hobby has been invaded by political correctness. Hooray! Thanks for being everyone's moral compass!

benglish09 Sep 2014 12:17 p.m. PST

Well put, Caesar.

OSchmidt09 Sep 2014 12:46 p.m. PST

Dear Caesar

Watch out, I see the tell-tale signs of a Dawghouse booby-trap on this one!

OSchmidt09 Sep 2014 12:50 p.m. PST

Dear John the OFM

Thanks, I did not know there was a third round. I voted for Nude and Semi-nude figures because that's what will torque out the pewter puritans the most.

Want to make a bet on how many days before PC pewter puritans gin up a new poll to get rid of the board again?

Otto

shadow king09 Sep 2014 1:13 p.m. PST

I must say don't look if you don't like and agree with the comments I don't want political correctness rammed at me on here i understand the moral compass but basically its toy metal men or women..

Grow up basically and hell i even have to put NSFW and cover up naked bits on my pics on certain sites

Weasel09 Sep 2014 1:29 p.m. PST

I agree with the people concerned about "political correctness". That's why I bring porn mags to my kids parent-teacher conferences.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP09 Sep 2014 1:47 p.m. PST

Yes, us puritans are really plotting the over throw of the board completely. We have gathered in the basement to map out our strategy and launch the next wave of protests.
Really now, give it a brake and accept the outcome of the votes.

Winston Smith09 Sep 2014 2:17 p.m. PST

You know…..
I would REALLY like to see "puritan" as one of the words bleeped by the Bleep-o-Matic. Not that it offends me, but those who fall back on it as their go-to insult annoy the Bleeped text out of me. YOU are the intolerant ones; you are the ones who cannot tolerate opinions different from your own. And while we ate at it, bleep "politically correct" for the exact same reason.

Fried Flintstone09 Sep 2014 2:24 p.m. PST

Good grief – I agree with John !!

Pictors Studio09 Sep 2014 2:32 p.m. PST

This is absurd. It seems like the reason why this current dialogue on domestic violence is taking place has more to do with the power we vest in sports personalities than in miniature figures, the names of miniature figure websites or wargaming or figure painting or all of them combined.

If you want to get rid of or rename a board to help the plight of women being abused, complain about the sports board.

Winston Smith09 Sep 2014 2:37 p.m. PST

As far as I know, Ray Rice did not play Age of Reason or 40k.
Or "Space Bimbos from Alpha Centauri" either for that matter.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP09 Sep 2014 2:42 p.m. PST

Don't worry Pictors, we are plotting to over throw the sports board also.

Mako1109 Sep 2014 2:46 p.m. PST

What does the appreciation of art, and the female form have to do with domestic violence?

Slapper of Kittens09 Sep 2014 2:57 p.m. PST

He (Rice) only fell back on football when he didn't make the Pro Wargaming Circuit.

Weasel09 Sep 2014 4:12 p.m. PST

All will fall before the politically correct communist hordes. Once we agree on the correct, non-oppressive colour for the arm bands.

Tankrider09 Sep 2014 4:24 p.m. PST

It wasn't domestic.. it was in an elevator in a casino.

YogiBearMinis Supporting Member of TMP09 Sep 2014 4:48 p.m. PST

It is sad that so many of you cannot see the link, well documented and discussed in many circles, that the objectification of women contributes quite heavily to domestic and related abuse of women in our culture. Here is a sample article, but you could google and be inundated with this stuff, so it is hardly a surprise.

All of this, and the links to something seemingly so trivial as the "Need More Boobies" board, hit me recently as a friend told me about how excited his 11-year old daughter was to learn Dungeons and Dragons. This made me think about the large numbers of young women and teen and pre-teen girls that I saw gaming at GenCon. I wondered, when I saw a random posting to the Need More Boobies board the other day, just what this board would mean to one of these young girls. Would it be "funny" or "trivial" to them to have a bunch of largely middle-aged and older men laughingly call one of their discussion forums such a title? Or would it be humiliating and embarrassing?

I think the answer is obvious. Many wonder why women, like the now-wife of Ray Rice, stay with these men who abuse them and show so little respect for them---one of the chief reasons, scholars tell us over and over, is that our culture sends constant signals to these women that they are inferior or defined by their sexuality. I am not preaching from the perspective of moral superiority; as I am saying, I just started putting puzzle pieces together myself. But I am right, and you would agree with me if you also give it a little more thought.

pzivh43 Supporting Member of TMP09 Sep 2014 4:57 p.m. PST

In most of the figures I see on the NMB board, they are certainly not inferior. In better shape than most of us, I'd bet. And much better armed than I am!!

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP09 Sep 2014 5:37 p.m. PST

I have turned off that board, whatever it will be called, so I don't have to see it.

Pictors Studio09 Sep 2014 6:09 p.m. PST

"am not preaching from the perspective of moral superiority; as I am saying, I just started putting puzzle pieces together myself. But I am right, and you would agree with me if you also give it a little more thought."

But you aren't right.

Ray Rice is being used for his physicality just as much as Beyonce is for hers. If he just had a great physique and no talent he wouldn't be able to play football but if Beyonce had absolutely no musical ability or perhaps at least the ability to dance she wouldn't be a super star either.

The desire to change the name of that message board is what is juvenile. It is tongue in cheek and funny. Sexuality is something that doesn't have to be serious all the time. Benny Hill is a funny show.

If you get all embarrassed and worried about such things you might want to take a step back and examine your own level of maturity and relationship with your own sexuality.

Boobies is a funny word. It is absurd that these figures are made with such large breasts in such skimpy armor. It is not necessarily unrealistic in every case but it is absurd.

I think these figures are funny, I think the title of the board more often than not reflects that. I also believe that anyone with a reasonable view of sex should not really have a problem with the title.

There is a problem with young women having deep insecurities. There seems to be a problem with young men having them too these days. People need to be taught to have confidence in themselves, to know that other people's words are just words and can be ignored. We need to stop protecting them from this stuff by shielding them from it and start protecting them by building them mental armor.

If those young girls had parents that taught them to be strong, self-confident human beings then they would view this board as trivial, if not funny.

You aren't right. You are part of the problem. You are trying to make this stuff go away instead of teaching them how to deal with it. You aren't helping anything, you are making the situation worse.

NWMike09 Sep 2014 7:38 p.m. PST

If looking at a toy soldier – fully clothed, fully naked, or any point in between – inspires you to violence against a living person, you may need professional help.

The name of the Board (or Broad…) will change. Within a week.
It will have little effect.

As can be seen by this thread, those who do not pay attention will continue to bitch and moan, and accusations of "political correctness" or "puritans" will fly.

More demands (and some will even be in the form of Poll Suggestions!) will follow, as inevitably as the grass is blue and the moon sinks into the ocean.

John the OFM09 Sep 2014 7:52 p.m. PST

You can link to as many radical feminists with an agenda as you wish. Published papers in the social "sciences" prove nothing beyond the fact that their peers who agree with them approve it.

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP09 Sep 2014 8:18 p.m. PST

Who among us doesn't get that 'boobies' is also a
term used for a certain species of seabird ????

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP09 Sep 2014 8:55 p.m. PST

Boy, oh boy, shaking my head and walking away.

WeeSparky09 Sep 2014 9:23 p.m. PST

Oddly enough though, ihatemen.org has not yet had one subscriber create a Ray Rice post yet. I don't think the feminists are as worried as you think they should be.

DJCoaltrain09 Sep 2014 9:38 p.m. PST

OMG!!!!!! Fer Gawd's Sake folks, we play with toy soldiers! What's mature about that?

You want mature – this is where my wife will be making her presentation (along with a Brit co-author):

link

I can say with certainty that she views my hobby (playing with toy soldiers) with amused detachment and benign tolerance. She's a serious person who does serious work and she would view this thread as disingenuous melodrama. We study and fantasize about war – the ultimate violence against women and children!!! We "celebrate" the greatest evil that can be perpetuated against women and children – renaming a board does not wash away those sins.

Or, it could be this simple: We're grown men who play with toys, and no one will give two Bleeped texts what we have to say about domestic violence – ever. We have zero gravitas regarding the subject, which means we should just hold our tongues while we keep on painting.

Or, Not! unicorn

I also don't like the name ACW either. So I propose "The Disagreement over the Forced Bondage of our African descended Brothers and Sisters by Caucasian Capitalist Landowners of the Southern States of what was formally known as these United States of America."

Hopefully that is now PC and offends no one. Maybe the capitalist is a little overboard, but I want to keep the Socialist and Communist wargamers happy. I also threw in sisters to appease the feminists wargamers. I guess I could also add in something about all the Irish immigrants that fought in the war, I mean disagreement, to appease the Irish wargamers. But then I have to include something for all the German wargamers. I just realized that I am using the word wargamer which I am sure the PC police will tell me is not politically correct. Would Disagreement Gamers work.

Boy it is tough being PC. I think I will go paint some more red coated disagreement moderators to help settle the disagreements between Zulu land and the Cape Colony. I hope it works out peacefully. I mean where is the fun in an armed conflict.

skippy000109 Sep 2014 11:16 p.m. PST

I can't stand it..the board stays, whether it's called "Look at the cans on that bimbo!" or "Tedious juvenile display of exploited feminist anatomy by puerile ManChildren".

I DON'T GIVE A RODENTS' GLUTEUS MAXIMUS ABOUT WHAT ANYONE POSTS ABOUT THIS ANYMORE!!!!

Now somebody paint up a red haired green eyed hot asian chick in a tanker uniform two sizes too small riding a 6pdr barrel of a Canadian Ram Tank.

So There.

For the new people reading all this, don't mind all the comments and seemingly hateful attitudes. It's just a bunch of ranting from people who can't get their way. They are really a bunch of nice guys who love their hobby. Sometimes they express themselves with that built in drive to win every game and, ah, maybe every argument too?

Good clarification for newbies….OPEN FIRE!!!!

YogiBearMinis Supporting Member of TMP10 Sep 2014 6:31 a.m. PST

@Pictors--I am disappointed in you. If you think you are correct, I challenge you to go ask 10 parents of young daughters whether it is fine for you to have a discussion board that concerns nude figures labeled as "Need More Boobies." If you can do that with a straight face and without embarassment, and if even a minority will give you a thumbs up, then good for you. I sincerely doubt many people would think well of you for your defense of this topic, at least not people like the ones I associate with at church, in scouts, in YMCA athletics, at my kids' schools or in PTA's, etc.

Keep in mind I am NOT attacking the sale or discussion of nude artwork, what I am criticizing is the juvenile and sexist title we put on the discussion board--there is a difference. I think you are being defensive because you think I am criticizing anyone who collects or paints such figures, but I am not. I just don't think we should be acting like little boys hiding something from our parents when we discuss it.

nazrat10 Sep 2014 6:59 a.m. PST

You can discuss the "juvenile and sexist title" all you like, but IT'S GOING TO CHANGE!!! The people have voted and they agree with you (mostly). Continuing to harp on it just makes you seem pedantic and annoying, and wins nobody to your side. You are about two or three months late in your outrage and starting a thread about it (with Needs More Boobies in the bloody title) only serves to call MORE attention to the thing you are so upset about.

Move on, people, nothing to see here…

Caesar10 Sep 2014 7:28 a.m. PST

As I wrote, misguided.

People looking for a problem always find what they are looking for, whether it exists or not.

Caesar10 Sep 2014 7:31 a.m. PST

I'll also add that I don't visit that board often (only when an interesting topic title pops up on the front page) and voted to change the name to something I think is more appropriate.
