Marie Schellinck, a Belgian received the French Legion of Honor and a military pension in 1808 "A figure certainly not common, but very fascinating is that of "female soldiers" in the Napoleonic campaigns. The story, made the papers, letters, anecdotes, recalls Marie-Jeanne Schellinck that, inflamed by the ideals of the French Revolution, came forward to make a contribution, determined to fight for their compatriots and to turn his ideals into reality. Marie-Jeanne, born in Belgium in 1757, after participating in the liberation movement in his country could join the army of Napoleon, in 1792, disguised as a man. He fought bravely at Jemappes where he was wounded and promoted to second lieutenant. For the bravery shown during all campaigns, Maria will be decorated with the Legion of Honour by Napoleon himself in June 1808, before all the soldiers lined up at attention, Napoleon will cite as an example, the following words: «Bow in the presence of this extraordinary woman, because it is one of the glories of our empire.» He died in 1840 at 83 years old." To be fair, the Wiki link cited by Altefritz suggests there was such a person, even if the story is grossly exaggerated subsequently. Quite why she did what she is said to have done………… |
