A 1940 Mk I Hurricane with 5 confirmed kills is up for sale at a cool 2.5 million pounds. link We know that the Spitfire is the darling of the RAF, but Hurricanes did their part also as can be seen in this clip. YouTube link |

They should put an export banning order on it |

If I had the money to get it (and maintain it), I'd bid. I'd also need to find someone to teach me how to fly a high-performance or aerobatic taildragger. I'd be happy to fly it back to the UK for events, but it would make an awesome addition to the local warbird museum. |

I think the IWM should look into picking up this piece. Them, or the RAF. |

I will echo the sentiment of others and say if I had the money I would bid on it then move it to a place in England where it would sit for future generations to unspderstand exactly what it did but more importantly, where it did it. |

That would be an amazing piece of history to own (and fly)… But what if it crashed…. |

Her Majesty's government should buy this as a flying memorial to "the few." There will never be a chance like this again. Take it out and fly it once a year, maybe. But Richard Branson can probably afford it more easily. |

Actually…. with his links to aviation, general 'Britishness' and money… that's not a bad idea! |
Bellbottom | 09 Sep 2014 2:31 p.m. PST |
It's all in the name. The 'Battle of Britain Memorial Flight' could maintain it and fly it regularly with its other aircraft. Scandalous it might go abroad. Come on Mr Branson, do this for the UK, Pleeeeze. |

Well… I just sent the link to Richard by email… |

The BBMF were certainly interested, but have been firmly priced out. They're also looking at buying a Mosquito in the near future – apparently for far less wonga than the Hurricane. As appealing as it is, if there's a choice, I'd rather see the BBMF (which already has two Hurricanes, albeit of a later mark) buy a Mozzie. |

Somebody needs to pick this up with a sense of the history of this airplane. And yes, as a colonial I agree, it needs to stay in the UK. Mr. Branson, your country is calling. |

I'd be interested to know how much of it is actually original for that price. A lot of these 'restored' aircraft are like Trigger's Broom – it gave him 30 years' service with eight new heads and three new handles… The reason I ask is that there's a group two miles from here, who are 'restoring' a Spitfire. However, the Spitfire is structurally unsound and will never get a Certificate of Airworthiness. Consequently, they're building a completely new Spitfire from scratch. This will then have the maker's plate fixed to it, making it 'legally' the original Spitfire… That said, the BBMF Lanc has had its main spar replaced at least once and possibly even twice. You therefore have to wonder how much of the original aircraft is left. |

Not sure if it applies here, but not long ago the USAF took a F-82 from the Confederate Air Force that they had for sale saying that they always have the right to claim any aircraft they once owned. And the courts upheld the seizure. Could the RAF do the same thing? |
