Some say see this design concept as boring but … With potential severe wind and dust storms on most known planets, I would expect planet colony buildings in most planets to be low to the ground. Wouldn't you? apltd.ca/films/display/31 link link A modular and expandable honeycomb design does seem make a lot of sense to many:
link As you can see, NASA doesn't have a problem with hexes. Maybe these guys can produce a few of their "furnished" hexagonal modules wide enough and low enough for use with 15mm miniatures on bases:
link Wouldn't that be cool? Thoughts? Dan |

Great idea, something that could be easily done in MDF. |

Perhaps the actual hex units could be for perimeter use as in the illustration, or as stand-alone hab units, leaving a wide protected common area in the center? And the central common areas could maybe have the same flooring as the individual hex units? And the roof could perhaps cover the entire footprint, both the common areas in the center and the hex units in the perimeter? Thoughts? Dan |

The one problem I can see here is that without windows, working and living in such an environment can be very depressing. I believe there is actually a law in Germany that every enclosed office working room MUST have a window to the outside (there's apparently a loophole that you can just unhinge the door so say, a basement room is no longer "nclosed"). It's debatable if the dusty, cragged wasteland of Mars makes for a nice view, but being underground for months on end without ever seeing the outside world doesn't dound nice and has the potential to affect the inhabitant's psyche severly. P.S: I think I have seen prison complexes constructed in the same layout, with the center hex containing the overseer's security office and around it the cell blocks. The idea is that you need only one such room to watch every inmate. |

hmm Dan thats a fantastic idea thanks for putting it up, this is the next terrain project |

I made up something along those lines in 3mm scale. Essentially, it's housing for itinerant workers, with each housing pod being a basic sleeping/living unit and connecting to a "hub" pod that would have kitchen and bath facilities. I'll post some pics of it when I get home tonight. |

The first thing I designed for MDF was a set of Hex Rooms, they were for sort of Hull Crawl. Might have to dig them out. |

Reminds me of those Hexbug tracks, which I think are really cool and could be used to some degree, but if one was to make something for 15mm with all the cool interior stuff that would be even better! :D |

Here are the prefab units I'd designed:
There's a bit more on my blog: link |

Cherno, I'd imagine if the outside environment is hostile enough, they hay have to forgo outside windows and instead try using video screen and psychological trickery. Javelin98, I like those designs, although on that one inside kitchen/bathroom combo I think you'd want to move the shower where the pantry is and the sink where the shower is now, to reduce the amount of piping you're laying. |

Javelin98 Those are really cool! You could go with a larger central hub for general living conditions, lobby, rec. room, bar, which ever. the dorms are great! The long hallway section could contain equipment lockers. I just love all those different layout ideas you have posted too! lots of options to go with! The furniture is great as well! I would make a stand alone bathroom, wouldn't want it in the kithcen area myself. All in all those are great! :D |

Looks neat, especially with interior pieces, though with furniture it will need to be made oversized, since otherwise the minis will not be able to maneuver around it, when based (even if on smaller 1/2" diameter bases). |

Well I think I have to go with the wife to the quilting shop and get my own set of quilting hexes (she wont let me play with her toys anymore) for templates and tinker around with them. ;) P.S. these hex buildings with Mad Mech Guys monorail |

It sure looks cool. But my head keeps thinking that in real life there would be a lot of wasted or unuseable spaces due to all of the corners. |

Bees do well with it. Some of the items in them would not be squared, but it should work. Makes the entire building stronger as well. As far as windows, better using monitors, to show the outside, or preferred view. Could see these as the storage pods on the ship, then used to build the first buildings, to get things started. |

Wow! Didn't know they had made them public. Good find! Of course, I have no idea what format that is, nor do I have the knowledge, equipment or materials to use the files. Nonetheless, it's cool that the files are there for those who might want to give it a go. Thanks, Dan |

The one problem I can see here is that without windows, working and living in such an environment can be very depressing. You should deploy on a submarine. Or honestly on a ship … 75% of the Earth is ocean and incidentally, 74% of the Earth is really monotonous to look at. Except when it's trying to kill you. Or you could have been with me on a lovely tropical island for the past three weeks (Marianas Gamer … where were you?) spending sunup to sundown in a small windowless room within a large windowless building. :) |
