Hi Have some of these to paint up for normandy. The main post is concrete and the wire carriers(?) would be ceramic and so dirsty white, but waht about the cross pieces, more concrete or wood. I did a google and couldn't find any images that showed one way or the other. |

Looking at contemporary photos and the vintage ones left, I would say metal. |

Well these poles appear to be made from wood, and the hangers have a very unique look about them. link |

I would be very surprised if rural poles in the 40s were made of anything but wood. |

Looks like the cross-pieces are metal (whether painted reddish, or just rusty), while the pole itself is just weathered wood. |

I recall looking for this info myself some time ago. The concrete poles were a "prestressed" design from the '30s. They were having problems with regular poles withstanding weight and stress loads in various types of soils. They came up with a construction process that strengthened the pole but also made it less susceptible to water. Prestressed concrete dates back to before this time period but its use in France's utility poles dates to the 1930s. I never did find the definitive answer for the cross member but it does appear as R Robertson states above to be of a metal material. The color seems to be a bronze or copper or dark rust. |

I guess that this is the type of post you have. In which case the cross-posts look like they would be bent metal in this example.

the "hangers" are called INSOLATORS and can be ceramic (white or brown), glass, (light green or light blue) or even black rubber. my Dad was a lineman for Bell Telephone and we have several examples he collected. there is a difference between phone lines and power lines. phone poles of that era would have several lines on them. power poles would only carry a few lines, or just one. |

Except that those are Canadian troops… (of the 4th Armoured Division at St Lambert-sur-Dives where David Currie won the VC; he's the officer on the left talking to a guy in a white shirt) |
