I was riding my bike around downtown Manhattan this morning, since the rain came through last night and cleared out that hot muggy air from the last few days. I saw one person in a wheel chair jay-walking, or perhaps jay-wheeling would be the proper description. Later I saw someone else in a motorized wheelchair speeding along in the street against traffic. Perhaps they were both looking to upgrade to a gurney. It may be a clue to how they got into wheelchairs in the first place. |

Normal traffic laws don't apply to people riding bikes, motorbikes and motorised wheelchairs. This is why motorists have to spend so much time watching out for them. |

Sounds like they are looking for that next big insurance paycheck. |

I find that jay-walking is safer than crossing at an intersection. I only need to look in two directions. At an intersection, I can get hit from 4 different directions and from cars turning (with or without turn signals and with or without a green light) (Right turns on red are legal in these parts.) |

Garrison, cops in this country would differe with that assessment. Stryderg, yes in PA where i am from the crosswalks seem sane. Down here in Maryland though i am dodging from all four directions. Grimm |

In most places in the US there ARE traffic laws with regard to pedestrians and bicycles. The problem is that burden of proof in such cases almost always falls on the driver of the car. |

There is a sense of entitlement to some in wheelchairs, especially the motorized ones. PARTICULARLY the obese in motorized wheelchairs. |

Dynaman8789, I will have to add that the pedestrian or cyclist in such cases is often dead. The motorist has a scratch and a possible lawsuit. I say this as a pedestrian and sometimes cyclist. I rent cars from time to time. John, my wife saw a young obese woman in a motorized wheelchair cutting diagonally across a busy intersection in NYC. She was smoking. Stacking the odds, as it were. |
