Some of you might remember the downed tripod I built a few months ago:
I planned to use it to mark tripods that were destroyed in the course of a game. Well, my game group played a pretty big game a couple of weeks ago and it quickly became apparent that I didn't have nearly enough wrecked tripods! So, I built some more! The one I had already built was pretty much intact, so I figured that it had been killed by the roll of a ‘9' on the damage table. These new wrecks I decided would have the damage be a bit more catastrophic! The first one probably rolled a ‘10' or perhaps had been pounded to junk by having its armor reduced to zero. In any case, it is pretty badly smashed up.
The next one has definitely rolled a ‘10'! You might notice the red glow in the photo. I placed a flickering LED light under the remains of the cockpit and the light shines through the shell holes. It looks much cooler in real life than in the photo.
The next two had REALLY bad rolls and blew up completely just leaving a crater and some smaller debris.
I felt these were a little bit too stark, but by adding a column of smoke (just fiber stuffing spray painted black) and putting another LED in each one, they look much more dramatic.
All in all it adds up to a bad day for the Martians!
Believe it or not, I built all four of these wrecks using just one tripod model, plus some left over arms and other parts from tripods I'd already built. A worthy sacrifice to liven up my game table. |

Truly inspirational! Will you be building wrecked steam tanks, as well? |
ScottWashburn | 07 Sep 2014 11:23 a.m. PST |
I might build a few just as battlefield debris. Destroyed tanks look pretty good with just a bit of smoke put on them, but the tripods don't lend themselves quite so well to that. I mean a burning tank is still pretty much the same shape as an undamaged tank (unless it explodes, I guess) but a tripod that has collapsed to the ground looks very different from one that is still standing. Plus, a half dozen wrecked tripods is probably all I'll need for most games, but I'd need a LOT of wrecked tanks :) |

Back when you showed us your first downed tripod, someone asked whether you could provide a top-down photo that others could print and use as a 2-D representation of a fallen Martian. You'd offered to check into that. Did anything come of it? thx |

Great eye candy! They will obviously add a real nice touch to any games you play. Well done! |

thosmoss, I asked Ernie Baker about it and he asked me to hold off on anything like that for now. |

Welcome to Nebraska, Martian B****es!!!!!!! As I actually live in Nebraska, I, for one, would like to welcome our new alien overlords. Perhaps with a lovely pie with gelignite filling… These are awesome! Excellent use of flickering LEDs! Now a sound chip of roaring fire! (Sorry, couldn't help myself. Hushing now.) Doug |

Details of the flickering LEDs, please? I'm working on a very similar project (with a starship figter, not a tripod). I found a company which provides a chip for 20 – PoweredPlay Gaming. Is that who you are using? I'm sure a quick writeup would generate lots of interest if you posted it. best, Nick PS Sorry for the thread necro. |

Back when you showed us your first downed tripod, someone asked whether you could provide a top-down photo that others could print and use as a 2-D representation of a fallen Martian. Hadn't noticed any update on this. I suppose if the concern is IP-related, someone could make a wreckage pile that only suggests the tripods. The 'pod 'craters' and lit smoking piles are barely AQOMF as is. Pen caps and polystyrene rods, maybe a bit of plastic egg, should be about enough. I'm hopeless at such, will give it a shot anyway. As with all my projects, breath-holding is contra-indicated. Doug |

Doug, As I noted above, Ernie Baker specifically asked me not to do this. Since AD sells several downed tripods, I guess they don't want competition :) Can't blame them. |
