Does anyone know if the Swedes had dedicated fighter, and attack squadrons for their Drakens, like for their Viggen units, or if they were organized as dual-role squadrons? I'm also curious about Swedish air-defense doctrine, and if during wartime, they would fly standing CAPs to protect their border (with their Drakens and Viggens), or if they preferred to use stealth and surprise, to launch ambush attacks on enemy aircraft intruding into their territory, from low-level? |

All of the Draken squadrons were fighter squadrons, except for one recon squadron. Even the Draken's Wikipedia page has them correct. Realistically, the Swedes were going to be using A32 Lansens and even A29/J29 Tunnans for attack missions. Going to war in a Tunnan in 1965 seems like a death sentence … |

The Swedish Draken wasn't a strike-fighter at all as stated (unlike the Danish version wich was capable of carrying attack munitions). I'm not an expert at all on Swedish air-defense doctrine, and I guess this would differ during the cold war. The soviets had few fighter aircraft with good reach over Swedish soil until late cold war (Su-27/MiG-29) assuming craft based in Germany would be otherwise occupied. Sweden also had (and to a degree still have) a whole bunch of radars covering much of the baltic with dedicated GCI-centers in hardened bunkers en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STRIL |

Don't forget, certain Swedish roads were used as airstrips, complete with dispersal areas, bunkers and HAS.

Thank you all for the info, and replies. I guess seeing the listings for bombs and rocket pods for the Drakens was throwing me off a bit (Danish ones too), and I figured they were used similarly in doctrine to the Viggens. The clarification really helps. Thanks for the links to the Stril system, and to their dispersal plans. I was aware of some of that. Even more fascinating are some of the pics of the underground airbase hangars, and their multiple exit points from them. Clearly, the Swedes were a lot better prepared than most nations to survive an initial, and follow-on attacks on their aircraft. |
