I Pre-ordered this book on Amazon when it was announced here on TMP One-hour Wargames: Practical Tabletop Battles for those with limited time and space Paperback by Neil Thomas (Author) link I was wondering if anyone had any info on what periods the rules covered. The description says 8, from Ancients to WW II…that's 2 periods, plus it has Franco-Prussian minis on the cover. That's 3 time periods…does anyone know what the other 5 are? thanks, Dave |

You could try the Pen and Sword web site as they are the publishers. |

Sounds interesting: "The book contains 8 (all-new) sets of very simple rules for various periods, from Ancient to WW2 and 30 scenarios which can be played using any of them, so you don't even have to take too much time thinking up a stimulating tactical situation and objectives. All the rules and scenarios are intended to be played on a 3ft x 3ft battlefield." Pen & Sword info here: link Amazon UK link here: amazon.co.uk/dp/1473822904 |

Ancients to WW2? Well that gives us the bookends. I would venture a guess at Naploleonics and ACW, probably something medieval. Possibly Colonials and some 18th Century linear battles. Age of Sail, and (Pre-)Dreadnoughts would be nice, something naval anyway. But I don't know for sure. |

Lots of customers in the UK canceling their Amazon orders and ordering direct from the publisher instead. Something about Amazon not stocking it yet because they didn't get enough pre-orders to offer the discount they were offering or something. I hope Amazon US is still planning on fulfilling my order. |

Not me – I'll hang on as Amazon sold it to me for £9.09 GBP with free postage (bought other non-gaming stuff at the same time). |

Yes – received mine today and I've had a skim through. Its very…erm…basic even for a Thomas set. However, it may well work. Armies of between 3 and 6 units (elements, like DBA, 3 or 6 inch width), the composition of which is chosen randomly through dice throws. There are only 4 troop types per period. So no Warband in the ancient period! But as there are such troops in the 'Dark Age' section I guess one could mix and match. There is a sense of ' if it doesn't suit you make it up' in the writing which is quite refreshing. The combat rules are very simple – the basic dice throw gives casualties per unit, with a few modifiers. The interesting bit is the 30 scenarios. The rules are for playing small engagements, or large scale skirmishes, rather than pitched battles. Its not trying to do Cannae with 12 elements, like DBA, but has engagements like'fighting retreat' 'last stand'and 'surprise attack'. Good for dark ages I would have thought, but the rules go up to WWII. There is a chapter on using the scenarios to make up a campaign, which would be very doable, and another with methods for solo play. There is a 'beginner's' feel to the book, but as with other Thomas rules the apparent simplicity can give better games than might be first apparent. The rules are probably also highly adaptable, as usual with this author |

That is weird! Seems stupid to even ask but – Amazon UK ? Not Amazon USA ? |

I used Amazon UK – I had pre-ordered in March, with a 'price promise' – £8.99 GBP – which is significantly lower than the publishers price and that quoted on Amazon UK now. |

Woo-hoo : arrived today. It's a bit different from his previous offerings – much more basic in layout & design than the previous Pen & Sword hardbacks or the Sutton Publishing paperbacks. Less colour, no pictures. That's all I can say so far as I only saw it 10 minutes ago, and all I've done is a cursory glance (hey – it's kinda late in the UK ya'know). |
