Viking 'ring fortress' discovered in Denmark Historians believe distinctive geometric fortresses may have been built by Sweyn Forkbeard as a military training camp from which to launch his invasion of England link (And apologies if someone else has posted this already.) |

Ok, I am going to ask the dumb question – if that picture is the feature in question then how did nobody manage to notice it before ? |

Only kidding. The photo is of an extant one of the other three known ones (it's name is in the fine print) and not of the new site. I had to go back and check that too when I first read the story. |

A photo from the excavation site. The earth walls have been levelled. The site was considered a site of interest based on information from 1970 when a pilot contacted the archaeologists. But no resources have been available for excavation until now. link Based on wood found at these fortresses it is believed to be Harald Bluetooth who had them build as part of establishing a centralized kingdom in Denmark. (Another fortress has been found in southern Sweden – the region of Skåne which was a core region of Denmark at that time) |

Thank you for the further information, Rune 3. And I'm surprised by how much of the Danish I could read without using a translated page. :) |

Some more on this, link As an aside, for anyone who had missed it, the photo from the telegraph piece is of a different fort. |
