I'm looking to cover most of my large table with "water" for my new pirate terrain coming from Renaissance Miniatures. I've seen terrain boards that look nice, but I'm looking for something I can take to cons without too much trouble.

I've had a very nice star map made from a banner company, but that had the advantage of very high quality graphics available for free. I haven't been able to find any water graphics that would work.

Any other ideas?

For large areas of water I use the fluorescent light diffusers. You can get them at home improvement stores, they are approx. 2' x 4' are fairly light yet sturdy. Paint the rough side with spray paint and then flip the smooth side up so that ships can easily slide along it.

Good suggestion, except that at 2' x 4' I wouldn't consider them very portable?

Should be able to buy textured acrylic sheets in any size.

Go to the fabric store and by transparent raincoat material in a roll. It's a clear vinyl, paint one side so that when you flip it over it has the shiny effect of the vinyl.

Not quite as good looking as the textured, hard styrene but definitely portable.

Clear colored plastic wrap from the grocery store. They have blue and green. One layer of each might have an interesting effect. I cut off a piece and wrinkle it up and put it down. Cheap.

Major B, most DYI can cut them down to 2x2, but 2x4 should fit in your car pretty easily.

Yes, I agree 2 x 4 will fit in a car, but I was kind of assuming (perhaps wrongly?) that when the OP said "portable" he was thinking more of public transport?

I think maybe the light diffusers would work and would probably fit in my car. I'm also interested in the plastic wrap idea.

Roll of blue fabric.
If unable to source an appropriate sea pattern, embelish it with shades of blue/green spray.
Place underneath optional clear pvc roll.

Cheers,

I use colored cellophane like you can find in gift wrap sections. The rolls are 3' wide and you can get all kinds of browns, greens, and blues if you look around. If the paper gets crinkled up it looks pretty good like waves. As far as portable all you do is roll it back up and go.

Either Michaels or Hobby Lobby have rolls of water effect paper. I think they are about 3' x 6' rolls and I think they run around $7.00 USD to $9.00 USD.

Blue patio tiles work very well for large scale naval wargaming:

They are portable in theory.
