Hi Guys, This photo was recently posted up on the Very British Civil Forum of British armoured cars training in 1939. However, we're completely stumped as to what they might be. Any ideas?

Looks like an early model of the Marmon Herrington. |

Yep, I think it's a Marmon Herrington. I've seen a restored MH scout car which has that rear wheel mud guard arrangement. |

See thats what I thought as well but I couldn't find any pics that matched up. The front mud guard seems to be the wrong shape and the half-enclosed rear tire doesnt match either. The general shape looks "right" for a Marmon Herrington however the killer is that the first Marmon Herrington's weren't introduced until 1940 and can't be considered interwar at all. Of course the date of the picture could be wrong and I could just be talking bobbins. Does anyone know what the "Crow" denotes? What does the panel ion the side by the spare wheel say? |

Yep it is the South African version built by Ford link |

Perhaps it's a MH "concept" car that lead to the 1940 MH. They might have a built a few of these "concepts" for army trials to prove that they could build a serviceable armoured car and a 1939 date would fit in that case. |

They gave them names. Google "Marmon Herrington Bandicoot" for this vehicle. |

It appears to be 2 Armd Regt, AC 3?4 The guns seem to be Lewis guns. Given the terrain and building in the background could they be Australian? Not sure what Armoured Regts they, or the South Africans had off the top of my head?? |

"Bandicoot" would place them in Australia. |

Well played Olicana, that looks spot on |

This link about the Bandicoot has the list of all of the MH armored cars by number and name: link LP3s – C-314 Crow, C-315 Curlew, C-316 Cockatoo, C-317 Stingray, C-318 Starfish and C-319 Snake – all to the 2nd Armoured Car Regiment Ashfield, NSW. This should answer the question. Jim |

Nice one. I was wondering about the terrain. I thought the front-end looked like a Marmon-Herrington, but nothing else seemed to fit. Cheers boys. |

They're LP-3, and/or LP-4 Australian A/C's. Built 1939-1940. The first LP-3 was named Crow. LP stands for Local pattern. Armed with Lewis guns. They were on Ford chassis with a Marmon Herrington AWD Kit. Reference: Australian Military Equipment Profiles. V.3 Austraian Scout and Armoured Cars 1933 to 1945. Author: Michael K. Cecil |
