"Chinese President Xi Jinping and all of the top officials in his government have made a rare joint appearance to mark 69 years since Japan's surrender at the end of World War II.

The ceremony on Wednesday was the first since Beijing earlier this year declared September 3 as a national day to mark Japan's defeat.

It comes as relations between the two countries continue to sour over territorial and historical disputes…"

I suspect WWII still weighs heavily on the Chinese psyche.

Not just WWII. For China, that was just the final chapter of 100 years of military humiliation, occupation, and looting by foreign powers.
This is usually ascribed to military weakness and technological backwardness and comes with a ‘never again' attitude.
